German-Style Apple Pie Recipe

Recipe adapted from one given to me by the German aupair of a friend. I added a streusal topping instead of a pastry lid.

Recipe Ingredients for German-style apple pie

125 g butter
250 g flour
65 g sugar
2 tsp lemon rind
1 egg
900 g apples
3 tbsp sugar
60 g sultanas
25 g butter
75 g flour
75 g demerara sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
50 g almonds, flaked
1 tbsp water

Recipe Directions for German-style apple pie

  1. Put flour, sugar, lemon rind and diced butter in a food processor with a pinch of salt and process to crumb stage. Add the egg and process until dogh ball forms. Wrap and chill for an hour.

  2. Meanwhile, peel core and slice the apples. Mix with sugar, sultanas and cinnamon.

  3. Roll out chilled pastry to line a 9 inch spring-form tin and fill with the apple mixture.

  4. To make the struesal topping, rub the 25g butter into the 75g flour and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Stir iin the sugar and nuts. Sprinkle with the tbsp water and roughly press together. Sprinkle over the apples.

  5. Bake for about 50-60 mins at 150C fan oven.

  6. Cool completely beforre serving. Best next day.
