You can make this lower in calories by using light or low fat products. If you can't find hoisin, try using thousand island dressing instead. If substituting bread crumbs for panko this will change the texture.

Recipe Ingredients for Fried-Fish Tacos

1/2 cup (4-ounces) mayonnaise
1/4 cup (2-ounces) hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons sweet relish
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 cup (8-ounces) all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon white pepper
1 tablespoon salt
1 pound (16-ounces) tilapia fillets
2 large eggs
3 cups (24-ounces) panko
3 cups (24-ounces) vegetable oil
12 corn tortillas

Recipe Directions for Fried-Fish Tacos

  1. In a bowl, whisk the mayonnaise with the hoisin sauce, pickle relish and lemon juice. (omit this step if you're using thousand island) Set aside.

  2. In a large resealable plastic bag or a bowl with lid, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and white pepper. Seal and shake. Add the fish to coat.

  3. Put the eggs and panko into two separate shallow bowls. Dip the fish in the egg then dip in the panko (japanese bread crumbs, may sub. regular bread crumbs). Transfer the fish to a wax paper-lined platter.

  4. In a large deep skillet, heat the oil to 350 degrees. Add half of the fish and fry over moderate heat, turning once until golden, about 3 minutes. Drain the fish on a paper towel-lined platter. Repeat with the remaining fish. Serve the fish in the tortillas (these should be warmed) with hoisin mixture or dressing, cabbage shredded, cilantro and scallions.

  5. **If desired, add cheese and other toppings you may choose.
