Easy to make and incredibly satisfying on a cold night.

Recipe Ingredients for French Onion Soup

4 large onions, peeled and sliced thin
1/4 cup butter
2 tablespoons flour
7 cups chicken broth (canned is fine)
1 Pepper to taste
6 slices French bread
8 ounces Swiss or Gruyere cheese, grated

Recipe Directions for French Onion Soup

  1. Saute onion rings in hot butter until soft.

  2. Stir in flour.

  3. Stir in broth and pepper.

  4. Cover and simmer 20 minutes.

  5. Place slices of bread in bottom of 6 ovenproof bowls.

  6. Ladle soup over bread.

  7. Sprinkle with grated cheese.

  8. Place bowls on a cookie sheet.

  9. Place under broiler 3 minutes, until cheese melts and browns.
