Recipe Ingredients for French Onion Soup

2 tbsp. butter
1 tbsp. cooking oil
4 cups onion
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp sugar
3 tbsp. flour
6 cups bouillon
1 cup white wine
1 tsp. bay leaf
6 oz french bread
1/2 cup shredded swiss cheese

Recipe Directions for French Onion Soup

Melt butter with oil in 3-qt. saucepan. Add onions and stir to coat with butter. Cover pan and cook over low heat 20 minutes, until onions are tender and trranslucent. Uncover pan, raise heat and stir in salt and sugar. Cook 30 minusts, stirring frequently, until onions have turned a golden brown. Lower heat to moderate, stir in flour, cook and stir until bubbly. Pour in 1 cup hot bouillon, blending with a whip. Add remaining bouillon, wine and bay leaf. Simmer slowly 30-40 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Ladle into individual bowls. Top with bread slices and sprinkle with cheese. Heat in hot oven until cheese melts.
