Are face wrinkles inevitable with weight lost in middle age? Does anyone have any experience they'd like to share? I realize there are many factors involved: amount of weight lost, how fast it was lost, individual skin characteristics, etc.
I'm hoping to slowly lose 30 - 40 lbs, am in my mid-50s, and take good care of my skin. A friend told me to expect wrinkles if I lost weight; was this a subtle attempt at sabotage? Even a shar pei face wouldn't stop me trying to lose weight , but I want to be prepared and do anything I can to prevent a face full of wrinkles. I already use a moisturizer, drink lots of water, don't drink a lot of alcohol, don't smoke...all the good things we're supposed to do to keep our skin dewy fresh.
Any experiences, thoughts, etc.?

I'm in my 40s, and I deliberately picked a goal weight that is a bit higher than I would have chosen in the past because of my age. As we age, we normally lose some facial fat anyway, so losing weight exacerbates that. My face is definitely thinner since I've aged, and if I'm not careful, it looks gaunt if I get too thin. What I've found, though, is that weight loss initially looks bad on the face, but if you hang in there a while, it looks fine again.
I haven't necessarily noticed more prominant wrinkles, though.
I don't have wrinkles on my face, but I have lost weight in my face, arms, and legs first...which sometimes makes me worry that my face looks older. I have lost forty-one lbs. with Calorie Count and my Wii Fit. At first, I lost weight fairly quickly...twenty lbs. down, and I felt great...forty lbs. down, and I still felt great, but the comments went from, "You look great!" to "Don't lose too much weight," "You've lost your breasts!" "You've lost your bottom!" I would joke that, "Yes, I have lost my breasts and my bottom, but eventually, I will lose my stomach." I have joked that now I am a smaller apple. Hahaha!
But, the only worry I have is that I did notice a change in the texture of my skin. I noticed a slight crepiness. So, that made me raise my calories from 1,200 to 1,400/day. I eat avocados, raw almond butter, healthy oils, mangos, etc. to make sure I get what I need for my skin. I am 48 years old. Like the person who posted before me, I have deliberately chosen a goal weight that is higher than I would have in the past because of my age. I will get to the height of 'normal' weight, and then I will see how that looks to decide if I should be slimmer.
I have supported you. We have a similar background as far as how we grew up without weight issues, eating healthy, and only needing to learn portion control. I post whatever tips I come across regarding keeping skin healthy in my journal entries, so that I can remember them.
Good luck...and you are right a Shar Pei face (or a gaunt face) shouldn't keep us from losing weight. Our hearts are more important than our faces! ;-)
Thank you for posting this question, I have had the same concern! I am 59, and had plenty of face wrinkles before losing weight (never smoked, but trying to tan my Irish skin in my teens, working outside in my 20s & 30s, and living in deserts didn't help). In the 12 weeks I've been back on Calorie Counter, I've lost 10 pounds, in a determined attempt to alleviate the various aches and pains of arthritis, bursitis, and plantar fasciitis. But there's been a surprising bonus: people say I look 10 (even 20!) years younger. I have 10 more to go before I enter the "normal" range, but plan to keep at it for overall health's sake. I have started to use more face cream and will try the avocado treats, too, as suggested above. Good luck to all of us!
Thanks all of you! I have had similar concerns, esp the crepe paper skin. I had a great aunt, and that's the way she wrinkled, like a big crepe paper skin. Since I've lost some weight, I've noticed more crepiness to my own skin. Sagginess, too, in ways I'd like to pretend wasn't there.
I have changed my goal to be at the top of my "healthy" range. If I get my cholesterol numbers in good about the same time, I'll not worry about losing more.
I am 44 and lost 80 lbs in 2010. I definitely notice more loose skin on my neck and lower face but it still looks better than before, no more double chin! CC puts my goal weight at 132 but I feel it would take too much off my upper body/face and make me look too thin. I am currently 147 and working more on weight lifting to build muscle and hopefully lose a few more inches off my abd. I still have a higher hip to waist ratio then I should have. My cal target is 1800-2200 now with plenty of protein and healthy fats, lower sugar/carbs.
Thanks everyone for posting your experiences and good information. It's so encouraging to know other women are dealing successfully with the same issues. And I am heartened after reading your success stories. Like all of you, I'm aiming for good health and a healthy weight. I hope saggy skin won't be a long term issue (and from what most of you have shared, it probably won't be), but I can live with it if my health and weight are good.
Yes dear....Wrinkles may occur in your skin as you lose weight because as you lose weight the skin starts to loosen and sag....
Gaining that weight again will stretches the skin, which may not be able to return to its original shape....So if you don't want that wrinkles by losing much weight so you can use some wrinkle creams also to avoid wrinkles....

Face wrinkles were inevitable anyway, right? Less perky/sagging breasts were inevitable anyway, right? Do what you can do - and that's all you can do - you are right not to let it hold you back.
I'm 29, I've lost 35+ lbs over a very long period of time - and my boobs are a bit deflated, I feel like my cleavage skin is where I've seen more of the difference. I'm not noticing a lot of change on face wrinkles - but my neck skin feels a little affected too...I'm doing some chest presses/pushups and hoping that will help boobs, but I don't have tips for the neck.
As a devil's advocate - your friend may be (accidentally) pointing toward a reality - ideal BMI from a health perspective does increase with age. At a certain age (some would suggest >50 - others suggest >60 - pretty much everyone agrees >70) This is because slightly higher reserves of energy/fat help your body survive health challenges that may present themselves! May only be a difference of 6-10 lbs though really!
