How much weight can I lose in 5 months?

Hi everyone,

My name is Don. I have been running 1 mile 7 days a week and been working out on my new equipment for 30-40 minutes each day. Also, I have reducing the amount of food I intake. My current weight is 245 pounds and I am tired of people making fun of me and treating me different : ( I want to continue working out until I can get my self-esteem back.

My question is how much pounds can I shed in 5 months doing what I am doing now?

That depends. How many calories are you eating daily? An estimate will do. How old are you?

If you have an 1000 calorie deficient per day, you will lose 40 lbs in 5 months. If you have a 500 calorie deficient per day, you'll lose 20 lbs in 5 months.

Let's assume your BMR is 2500. Factor in just daily living, which brings it up to 3200. Then your exercise will bring it up to aprox 4200 a day. If you ate 2200 calories a day, you'd have a daily 2000 calorie deficient. This would be an 85 lb loss in 5 months, which would bring your weight to 160 lbs.

Then again, this is all an estimation..so give us more details (age, height, your current calorie intake, what your lifestyle is like..active or not), and then we can help you properly.
A healthy weight loss would/should be 1-2 lbs a week.  So if you average about 1.5 lbs/week loss, in 5 months you could lose approximately 30 lbs...however keep in mind also that men tend to lose it quicker than women, so you would probably be able to lose more like 35ish lbs, especially since you're also exercising.

Before, I started excercising which was a week ago my calorie intake was around 2500 daily. Now, I am trying to intake 1100-1400 a day. I am 20 years old and I am 5'10. Also, my lifestyle as of now is very active. I am trying to wake up 7:00 a.m. in the morning to run one mile a day and then workout on my bean for 30-40 minutes.

Don you are going to lose alot but a goob bit of that will be muscle. You just aren't eating enough at 1100-1400 to fuel running and your bean and your body. Try reading this, it goes in to what ilisa was talking about. And this topic mostly this.
Hey Don,

Your current AMR (the amount you burn with the activity you currently do) is 4000 calories a day. You are eating 1100 - 1400 calories a day, let's average that to 1250. 4000 - 1250 = 2750. So you are having a daily deficient of 2750 calories. In one week, that is a 5.5 pound weight loss. In a month, that is a a 23.57 pound loss..so in 5 months, you'll have lost aprox 118 pounds, putting your weight at 127 pounds.

However, I do not recommend losing weight this fast at all. It is VERY dangerous to lose this fast, for your organs, your heart, even your brain. You will also lose a ton of muscle by losing this much weight this quickly, which is not good. You want muscle. Muscle burns more calories.

I'd recommend continuing with your exercise plan, as it will help you build muscle and help your heart. You should cut down by 30 minutes or so if you start to feel sick/weak/tired/worn out. But you should up your  daily calorie intake to 2200. This will be a 1800 calorie deficient per day, and will result in a 77 lb loss in 5 months, bring your weight down to 168 pounds, which is in the healthy weight range for a 5'10" 20 year old man.

You're eating way too little now Don, as a male at 5'10, I'm assuming of average build you should be eating at least 1500 calories a day if you haven't had your metabolic rate measured professionally.

If you're exercising as much as you say you do you should be eating 500-700 calories more than 1500 or whatever you've burned off by exercising.

If you continue eating so little, you'll eventually crack and binge and you will most definately start to lose your muscle mass instead of gaining muscle mass like you should.  As many have said, it's dangerous to lose so much weight in so little time.

You should use the tools provided on this site to help you find a healthier way.
Don, I'm a 6', 51 year old man.  I started at 230 in July and lost 50 pounds (as of today) in a little over 4 months - so it can be done fairly quickly - especially if, like me, you're driven and impatient.

It wasn't easy though - I exercised like a mad man and completely changed my diet.

Couple of pieces of advice:

- If you're not already weight lifting add weight training to your exercise routine.  It'll build muscle, and the more muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn... which will reduce your fat faster.  I alternate between aerobic and weight-training routines every other day.  Plus, as you buff up you'll be lookin' good for the ladies!  You'll be surprised how quickly you'll see a difference.

- Look carefully at your diet.  Sounds to me like you're cutting back too much.  Eat more healthful foods and you can eat more and feel full.
