Have to lose 10-12 pounds in 21 Days!

Quote  |  Reply

No... I'm not crazy. I have always wanted to model... ever sense I was a little girl. And now is my chance! See I'm only 5'2, and America's Next Top Model is having a casting call for women 5'7 and UNDER! I am now 123, and need to get down between 115 and 110 before the  auditions on the 25th. I'm starting at a new gym tomorrow morning and could use any advice on doing this. I don't need to hear how unhealthy it is... I already know that. I know all the reasons WHY it's unhealthy too... but this is my dream... and I will do anything.

If I eat 1200 calories a day (the recommended amount for women), will burning that many calories a day burn off a pound every two days or so? Give me some tips :)

What about WHAT I should eat? I'm vegan... so I'm pretty restricted. When I only eat fruit and vegetables I lose weight really fast... should I stick to that? But then I need protein right?... I'm trying to figure it all out tonight before I start my regime.

Even if you were to eat only 1200 a day, you would not be able to lose that extreme amount of weight unless you were obese. Which you are not. In three weeks, you could probably lose about... three pounds if you were lucky. Even if it's your dream, it's extremely unlikely that this kind of drastic plan will work.

Sorry to burst your bubble but that isn't going to happen and since you say you know why it is unhealthy I won't lecture you on that, even though I feel I should. What I am going to say though is you need to eat more than 1200 calories if you are going to be working out, and no. you will not burn off a pound every day or two. not realistic.

Sorry. It just isn't a healthy outlook on weight loss.

The fast weight loss i ever did for my modelling was a rate of 5lbs a week. it was a compbination of exercising every night to my exercise dvd, walking everywhere and leaving my car at home and living on a liquid diet of slimfast breakfast and lunch and soup for dinner and no food after 6pm.

the only problem  with this is the effect it can have on ur face. I lost a little bit of colour as i was starting to become a little run down and then gained 2 spots (i never get spots).

Im also vegetarian and these shakes are full of protein . if you stick to your fruit and veg to help you lose wieght really fast but have one of these shakes for your breakfast then itll give you the calcium, protein iron etc that you are needing.  These results wont last forever though, I lost 3 stones so far and have now come to a complete stand still.

I was eating a total of less than 700 cals per day and burning off 500 a night. very dangerous and yeah ok i got my modelling contracts but i gained a liol back when i went back up to eating 1000 a day.

Do what makes u happy, just b careful chick . Let me know how your auditions go xxx

I bet you can do it...Go for it, just don't do it forever. After the auditions you can put your cals back up, even if you put a bit of weight back on initially, you can start losing it again. I personally eat loads of lettuce at the moment...its filling and vertually no cals.  I'm on around 1200 cals a day (I weigh 125), not doing any exercise though as I'm studying for my finals at uni,  but i am losing 3lb a week (so far...I assume that will slow down soon though!). So anyway, I'm sure you can do it. Good luck...be sure to post your progress.

Add a spinach and mushroom salad to your lunch and dinner, lots of nutirents, tasty and you can have a huge filling salad for very little calories. Throw a little tofu on there too, and you'll have a pretty rounded meal. Unlike lettuce, I find that I can sit down and eat spinach w/o any dressing.  Good Luck girl!

The Calorie Count website is not about fast changes it is about lifestyle changes and losing the weight safely. I have a feeling moderators will be in here soon to say they don't support stravation diets and extreme measures of losing weght. Its not healthy and with so little to lose you probably won't reach that goal realistically in your time frame. Ah, well people will do what they want to do though.

Thank you everyone for the help... and even for those who say it's impossible and I shouldn't do it.  This isn't about fast weight lose because I don't want to make a life style change... I'm doing it JUST for the audition. After the audition I would eat more calories but continue to work out everyday. So please know that I'm not looking for fast results because I am unwilling to work for a "real" goal. What do wrestlers do to make weight? It's just what needs to be done for me to have a chance at something I love.

Please know that Calorie Count cannot and will not support you eating less than 1200 calories a day. We consider this unhealthy and CC is all about HEALTHY weight loss or weight maintenance

From Mary Hartley, Calorie Count's Director of Nutrition: "By eating only 800 calories, you will not get enough energy, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and other components of food. In time, you could become malnourished, which can cause severe health risks such as respiratory infections, kidney failure, blindness, heart attack and even death."

Here is a brief reason why never less than 1200 from the Advice section of Calorie Count Plus, under the Q&A tab:

Why must I eat at least 1,200 calories a day when I want to eat less?

In order to get the daily food servings you need for a balanced diet, it takes about 1200 calories a day. With careful planning, you could have a balanced diet on 1000 calories, but the restrictiveness of a very low calorie level can lead to binging and weight cycling, which will take you further from your weight loss goal. What's more, very low calorie diets can cause excessive muscle breakdown and metabolic adaptations, which can drive down your calorie requirements. In the end, you'll need fewer calories to maintain a higher weight

Your body needs at least 1200 calories per day to survive.

Here is a very rough scientific break down provided by a dietician for a 5' 2", 19 year old female weighing approximately 100 pounds, sitting around all day and doing nothing:

-The heart needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The kidney needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The Liver needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The brain needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The skeletal muscle needs 30% of the calories (360 cals)

ANTM happens every single year. Meanwhile, your body is the only one you will get. And trust me, you'll be no good for any audition, catwalk, or photo shoot, if your body gives out on you from depriving yourself of what you need.

There is no way that on so few calories you will fuel your body with what it needs. The minimum intake for a sedentary female over 21 is 1200 calories per day. For a sedentary female under 21 or a man over 21 it is 1500 per day, and a sedentary male under 21 1800 per day. And believe it or not, that’s only the sedentary minimum. Unless you are very, very short and small, and/or if you are working out it is very likely you will need even more calories than those minimum guidelines.

If you are 21 or older use CC's tools to work out your BMR so you have a number to work from for your diet: http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/calories-bur ned.php. If you are under 21, CC's tools are inaccurate and you should use this calculator instead: http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html as you are still growing. Yes, even in the later years - there's more going on inside of you that you simply can't see.

Eating too low a calorie intake, or having a deficit from your BMR greater than 1000 results in something called "survival mode", where your body holds every last thing it can get in expectance of a famine. Water, food, calories. Explained:

  • Dieting & Metabolism - This article explains starvation mode and why undereating is counter productive.
  • The Body Neglected - This is what happens when you undereat for an extended period of time.
  • "Obesity on 700 Calories" - A tale of starvation mode's devistating effects, and proof you don't have to be underweight to be starving.
  • From Ask Mary, the segment provided by our CC nutritionist Mary Hartley: On the dangers of undereating and what it does to your body.

The physical dangers that come with undereating are numerous. You put yourself at risk of osteoporosis, of loss of fertility if you lose your period, hair loss, electrolyte problems, a weakening of the immune system, low blood pressure, blood disorders such as anemia, heart problems, and even death. The mental woes that come alongside can be just as devestating. Depression is common in undereaters, as well as distorted perceptions and problems like Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Crash dieting will do nothing to help you lose weight as the weight will likely come straight back on, and undereating can easily do more damage than good. Think about it - your health or your vanity? Weight is easily lost if you do it in a healthy and sustainable manner which is what CC is all about.

In your case, with only 10 lbs to lose, Atkins is the answer.  Cut out all carbs, drink plenty of water, eat lots of vegetables and protiens.  Eat fruits too, in moderation.

If you're going to be working out, then you should consider the South Beach diet.  In my opinion, it's healthier than Atkins, because you are allowed whole grains & oats, etc.  This will give you the needed energy to spend in the gym.

Both of these diets are often used to reach a quick target weight.  They are very effective for quick loss, but not as good for maintaining weight.  For that, you will need to eat well, calorie count and excercise.

As for the plan you detailed above, it's very unhealthy and may have severe negative effects.  You will be living on minimal calories, creating a strain on your body and then forcing it to work harder than you ever have before.  Under such pressure, your body will go into starvation mode - storing fat because it thinks there's a scarcity of food.  By continuing to stress your body in this way, it will start burning lean tissue (muscle) as well.  Yes, you will see the pounds come off, but it's basically because your body will be eating itself instead of food.

You only have 10-15lbs to lose...do Atkins/South Beach.

I wanted to say that this MAY be a once in a lifetime opportunity because top model is asking for women UNDER 5'7". Who knows if they will do it again? Right now I'm at 1000-1200 calories and I'm working out a lot.  And it's not something I plan on doing for an extended period of time. Just until I lose 10 pounds, and then I will eat and exercise normally and sensibly :)

Oh and I can't do Atkins or South Beach cuz I'm vegan Laughing

maybe the moderators should step in again.

i cant believe some of you people are actually encouraging this crap.

lacey, i dont want to crush your dreams, but even if you starve yourself you arent going to lose weight that quick.  im obese and i cant even lose weight that quick.  be healthy--mind and body.
