eating 1000 cal per day, 241 lbs, working out, and still not losing weight???

Hello, I am 5'5, 241 lbs. I am currently eating right around 1000 calories per day, but I am not losing weight. I also work out for about 30 minutes per day, and walk around the house all day long. What am I doing wrong. Should I up my calorie intake? Someone please help me to understand this...

Yes you definitely up your calorie intake. My goodness, eating 1000 calories a day and then burning half of them off? Your poor body is in starvation mode. It is going to hold onto every ounce of food you give it because it doesnt know when you are going to feed it again. Have you used the tools on here to figire out what you need to do? Please do and eat!!!!!

I believe the issue is that you are not taking in enough calories, if working out, and currently at 241 lbs.

I'm around the same stats as you.  I'm 27, 5'5" (around there), 237 and I need to eat 1680 without exercise.  So if you are walking 30 min/day.  You need to be eating more than 1680.

I've been losing about a pound a week, so you should start seeing some weight lose if you up your calories for awhile.

Please note that you may see a slight gain when you start eating more.  This will most likely be because your body hasn't had enough food and it wants to hang on to it.  Once you've been eating more for a couple of weeks, the weight should start coming off.

YOU AREN'T EATING ENOUGH! Please use the tools here on CC to see how many calories you should be taking in. Your poor body is hording fat because you aren't giving it enough calories to properly burn any fat off. If you're female (depending a little on age) and if you would consider yourself to be lightly to moderately active you need something like 1500-1800 calories per day. (If you're a guy, you need even more!) If you start eating more you will burn better. Think of it as adding more fuel to the fire so the fire can burn hotter. If you are a woman, you should never EVER EVER eat under 1200 calories at a very bare minimum just to keep your organs functioning. This is if you're sitting on your bottom and not moving for the entire day. If you are getting up and doing ANYTHING (especially excercising, etc.) then you need even more calories.

Pleases eat more. You are honestly going to end up with some serious health problems if you keep starving your body like this.

I don't know if you like/know/ listen to Jillian Michaels, but if you go to the KFI radio website you can listen to her archived shows.

ANYWAYS I think you need to eat more, but maybe not MUCH more. Jillian (who KNOWS her stuff) believes that the heavier you are the fewer calories you can consume without hitting a plateau. THAT being said I think you still should consume at least your BMR. If you're not working out much (on the Biggest Loser they work out for 7 hours a day!) just eat your BMR plus the equivalent of the calories you burn during exercise, and see what that does.

As the posts above state, you're definitely not eating enough. You need to eat to lose, and need to increase your calorie intake. I don't know what your stats are, but I am a 22 year old female and currently weigh 223. I need to eat 2180 calories per day just to maintain. I work out 5 days per week for at least an hour, and on average I eat no less than 1600 and no more than 1800. Try increasing your calories a bit, and you should start to see some results. Also, use the burn meter (it really helps). I set mine to sedentary and add my workouts to it. Based on what I burn in a given day, I make sure that my calorie intake for the day is no more than 1000 less than what I burn.

Years of doing just what you are doing caused me to gain weight, up to 225 pounds (I'm 5'4")  Shortly after joining CC, a very kind person pointed out that I wasn't eating enough.  I thought he was nuts because "everybody knows" you have to eat less to lose weight.  Yet I'd been eating less and gained and gained, on the constant yo-yo of dieting and giving up and gaining back.
