Help y'all! I've heard so many opinions about when to eat. Can I or can't I eat after 6pm. If not, why? If so, why?

I don't see why you wouldn't/shouldn't eat after 6pm. It's really just all about calories in and calories out. As long as you're burning more than you're eating, you're going to lose weight.

eat when you're hungry.

because it will 1) make you less grumpy 2) make you less prone to binging and thinking of food, and 3) (the big one) it will keep your metabolism up. 

So unless you're going to bed at 7 or 8, eat when you're hungry.  Just try to make wise choices when you do so.

By all means.. eat after 6pm! Heck, my dinner isn't even until between 6:30-7:00pm. And then I have dessert or a snack later around 9pm.

Of course you can eat after 6PM.

By depriving yourself of food, you are actually slowing your metabolism down. The secret to keeping your metabolism up through out the day is to eat 5-6 small meals a day. Eat every 2 1/2 - 4 hours with the right porition sizes geared towards your specific goals.  I would recommend trying to get in most of your carbs in the first 3-4 meals of the day, and then for the last few meals you eat mainly proteins, healthy fats, etc later on at night. Carbs are great to give you energy for exercise, to have right after exercise, and earlier in the day when you are most active. However, the reason why you avoid a lot at night when you are less active is because they just sit there which can lead to fat. Good carbs come from whole grains (whole wheat pasta, brown rice, whole wheat bread, oatmeal) and fruits/vegetables.

You can eat all the way up until 2 hours before you go to bed. Just make sure to eat the right types of food at the right times during the day.

I pulled this off the internet along with a bunch of other helpful articles. on the subject. What I got from all of them was pretty much as follows.

"Myth: Eating after 6 p.m. causes weight gain.
Fact: It does not matter what time of day you eat. It is what and how
much you eat and how much physical activity you do during the whole
day that determines whether you gain, lose, or maintain your weight.
No matter when you eat, your body will store extra calories as fat."

If I didn't eat after 6 pm, I'd DIE.  Especially if you have glucose issues (hypoglycemia, diabetes, etc.), you should keep it consistent throughout the day.  If I don't eat right before I go to bed, I get insomnia and feel sick in the morning.  Of couse, it does take me a while to go to sleep.  But, I am digesting and burning while sleeping, so it makes sense to fill the tank a bit (maybe 100-200 cals).

That's a myth. It's good you're being skeptical of ridiculous-sounding claims like that.  :P

Calories are calories, no matter what time you eat them. I eat almost ALL my calories for the day after 6pm.

Thanks for the  info, y'all! It has been very helpful. It's also kept me from feeling guilty for eating watermelon and cantaloupe at midnight! I have insomnia and am never in bed before 2am and sometimes even later. It was driving me crazy! I figured that "normal" people went to bed around 10pm so I should not eat within 4 hours of going to bed. Even that was a challenge so I turned to y'all for advice and once again you came through for me!Smile

 Eat when you want...I eat at 8pm and sometimes at 9pm

I think this myth comes from people who basically fast all day, then eat OVER their allowed calories at night, without even realizing it.  As long as you are eating enough for breakfast and lunch that you won't binge out of control at night, I don't think it makes any difference what time you eat.  I eat dinner at 8 a lot, or have a small snack at 10, and am losing week after week.

Did you realize that watermelon (and celery) actually act as negative calories.  Meaning that your body burns more energy and calories just digesting them than the foods actually have in them.  So eat all the watermelon you want with no guilt.

Go ahead and eat after 6 pm.  It's not so much when we eat but what and how much. Although I know plenty of people, myself included that eat on a schedule to keep our metabolisms firing.  If you want to burn fat you'll want to create a deficit.  For some people the evening is a time to binge, if that's a problem then setting a cut off time may help.

It all boils down to calories in vs. calories out.

As long as you're eating your recommended calorie intake, and not going over - it doesn't matter when you eat. 

You can eat 30 seconds before you lay down, but there are foods that are more difficult to digest which might keep you awake.  So, if you're going to snack, even with your head on the pillow, I'd keep it light and minimal. 

I wouldn't consume thanksgiving dinner right before shut-eye ;)
