I've recently lost 43lbs on a reduced-calorie diet (about 1000-1200/day) and I am also a vegetarian. Recently (about a month ago) I noticed that more of my hair was falling out than usual. I have very thick, thick hair that is a source of great pride for me, so imagine my dismay when I realised my hair was falling out. I consulted with my dietician and she believes that my hair loss is a result of some nutritional deficiencies. I have taked steps to correct this by taking a multi-vitamin and changing my diet. I also had a blood test done by my PCP which came back normal, ruling out any thyroid conditions or other similar problems which can cause hair loss.

Has any one else experienced this kind of hair loss? How long did it take before your hair stopped falling out excessively? I'm getting married in November and am afraid of looking awful with thin hair if it doesn't stop soon!

oh my hair is fallin out too!  It's still 'thick' but my shower gets covered in strands like mad after I have lost 113lbs.  *sigh*.  I'm going to check out those vitamins snoozin suggested.  However, I dont want to grow a mustache or anything.  Just the hair on my head please :)

My hair lady told me to eat more red meat.  There's something in red meat that is supposed to help, but your a veggie head, so I dunno :)  I dont eat red meat either, I only eat chicken.
that much weight loss creates a hormonal change in your body so its natural to shed some extras.

also the 1000-1200 cal diet - it hard to get everything perfect all the time with that so it could be malnorishment.

when you take your vitamins as a veggie person..have a little olive oil or other fat with it to help with absorbtion. running low on the nutrients to grow hair is very common in a vegan or veggie diet.
not that its a problem that you cant eat like that. you just have to be more nutrionally aware. meat is high calorie and high nutrient and has fats. its a reason why meat eaters have this problem less.

"Hair loss occurs when the diet is inadequate in the B vitamins - especially B6, biotin, inositol and folic acid; and the minerals magnesium, sulfur and zinc. The B vitamins, especially B5 (pantothenic acid and B3 (niacin), are especially important for hair growth. Certain essential amino acids are found to control the thinning and thickening of hair in laboratory animals. For example, when rats were fed a diet deficient in magnesium, they lost their hair in bunches. The situation was even more serious with some other B-vitamins. When rats were fed a diet low in biotin or inositol, they became hairless! This nutrient-deficient condition was found to be reversible. When the rats were fed a diet that was rich in B vitamins, it resulted in the complete restoration of hair.

Heavy intake of vitamin supplements, in some cases, have resulted in stimulating hair growth. Men deficient in vitamin B6 often lose their hair. When they are deficient in folic acid, some men became completely bald! As in case of animals, when normal intake of theses vitamins were restored, the hair also returned in most instances.

Taking large doses of vitamin A (100,000 IU or more daily) for a long period of time, on the other hand, can trigger hair loss, but stopping the vitamin A will reverse the problem. As in case of deficiencies, often the hair grows back when the cause is corrected.

Essential fatty acids (flaxseed oil, primrose oil, and salmon oil are good sources) improves hair texture. Prevents dry, brittle hair.

Raw thymus glandular stimulates immune function and improves functioning capacity of glands.

Dosage: 500 mg daily.

Caution: Do not give this supplement to a child."
If you recently started working out, then the hair ties that you use to pull your hair back can contribute to hair breakage.

Make sure that you get plenty of B vitamins, which include Folic Acid.  These will help new healthy hair growth.

I have lost a tremendous amount of hair during my diet period. I was on the calorie control for about 4 months and then i stopped. After that my hair start to fall out like crazy. It was like a bunch of hair that i can pull out off my skull and my hair was just so weak.

If you have nutrient defiency, it will show out from your hair condition. My mom, who is a dermologist told me that eat more protein. So then i started eating more lean meat and fish. Finally after a few monthes of recovering. My hair stopped falling and new hair has grown...

Same, and i'm still losing it tho gaining weight - it might not be weight loss, but vitamins minerals you're lacking
I posted about this a few weeks back. Turned out it was two culprits:

1) pulling my hair back in a ponytail

2) repeated highlighting of my hair

#2 weakened the hair, making #1 break it right off.... I just had my hair cut really short as a result, to even it out. Looks a lot better now!
I was losing hair some before counting calories... since counting my hair hasn't been an issue at all.   Being a guy though mine is pretty short and actually quite a bit shorter than it was a month ago even.  So definitely check into the vitamines.

Also make sure you are eating enough.

If you a woman you need to eat 1200 calories + what you burn exercising + more if you are on your feet all day.

So many women undereat and as a result loose some hair as well as have problems seeing real weightloss and so on.   So always be sure you eat enough, even if that means eating an extra 100 cals per meal than you are now.
That happened to my sister after she turned vegan and cut her calories like crazy.

Once she started eating fish and eggs again it thickened up again.
I had the same thing happen to me...went to every specialist and they said it was alopecia and I couldn't do anything about it.   After lots of research and tracking my protein (thanks to cc), I found that I needed more protein in my diet.  I upped my protein intake with Isopure Low Carb / Cal Chocolate Shakes (very good, non chalky shakes) and my hair has definately thickened and is not falling out like it use to.   

Also, the doctor recommended Biotin, which seemed to help a little.

I once had a hair loss problem.  It was because I had cut my fat back too far.  (It's not recommended to go under 10-15% calories from fat.)  It can also be caused by not getting enough protein. (you should get at the very least 10% of your calories from protein. Most folks go for more like 20%)  The good news is that it will grow back as soon as you correct the deficiency.

I know I don't have alopecia, and when I analysed my diet I realised that I was very lacking in the vitamin C department. Hopefully, with the changes I've made to by diet and the multivitamin I have been taking, my hair loss will stop soon.

I certainly don't want to be bald for my wedding!

I also realised that, while eating only 1000-1200 calories a day was efficient for shedding the fat, it is the reason I developed this deficiency in the first place. I am upping my calorie intake to 1500-1700 calories a day to make room for all the additional veggies and protein that I was lacking.

Hi, a little late on this thread - but I was actually searching for the opposite! I've been focusing on eating more protein for a few months now, and my hair looks better than ever. I think it's the protein - hair IS 91% protein afterall.

I am following essentially the south beach diet phase 1 - lots of lean protein and green veggies, and of course to burn more calories than I take in, I've lost 16lbs so far, and my hair looks better than ever - i think because I actually get in enough protein now, I try for 80-120g a day - that's a lot on a 1200-1400/daily calorie target! I do protein shakes for breakfast and lean protein & veggies the rest of the day, when I was eating oatmeal and whole grain carbs I maintained, but couldn't lose, so I'll add those back slowly once I reach my goal - I'm only 2.7lbs away!

If you're vegetarian - are you willing to consume whey protein? it's an excellent source of protein that comes from milk. not vegan, but vegetarian. Cytosport complete whey in the cocoa bean flavor actually tastes really good imho =) 

I've read for figure athletes who are trying to cut fat and maintain muscle mass it's advised to consume 1.25g/protein per pound of lean body mass.

This has worked for me, I don't eat junk, I'm not hungry, and I'm seeing results.

Wow, it's nice to know I'm not alone too. Starting from about June, I was determined to lose weight. I consumed about 1500 calories a day along with about 400 calories lost from vigorous running.

Recently, I've noticed my hair has been falling out. For someone who's had thick and poofy hair their whole life, it's quite terrorizing. When I run my hand through my hair I see around 5-10 hairs fallen out. I was scared. Soo, I've been searching the Internet for: shampoo, conditioner, or whether it was a side-effect from some illness. Finally, I had a hunch that it was from the diet. And I'm guessing right now it is.

I've lost 25 pounds, in a span of 4 months, and I'm trying to get my lifestyle and eating habits back to normal. I'm taking a multivitamin which has Biotin, Choline, Zinc, Insitol, and Vitamin B, which seems to be slightly helping. However, there are some obstacles hindering my plan for a normal and healthy diet: my parents have a fast-food restaurant, they're busy working, and I'm busy studying. I now am eating more, but the most optimal choice for food seems to be junk. Therefore, I'm starting to eat more, but it's junk.

Does anyone have any suggestions for quick, cheap, and healthy snacks or foods? I'm desperately trying to get my hair back by eating more, but the food that's available and convenient is not going to help.

I hope someone can help me. I'm a very meticulous person, and I can't help but get stressed when something goes wrong.

I too am having similar problems, I'm an avid runner and about four months ago I decided to eat a more whole food plant based diet. I lost about 25 pounds in 2 months and noticed my hair was dry, brittle and falling out. Since then I've started monitoring my diet and eating 2000 calories a day + excersise compensation and getting 100% of the recommended daily intake of protein and iron. I've also started a multivitamin and biotin supplement. My hair is continuing to fall out, and I even got it cut shorter which helped for a while. Its been about two months and I have maintained a costant body weight and been on this healthier diet, I've read that its a cycle and takes time, I'm just worried I'm still not doing enough, is there anyway of knowing? And when will it stop!! Thanks!

The massive hairloss started a couple of years ago for me.  The hairloss is much better, but I never regained what I lost.  I've had several bloodworks done--all okay. 

I've lost probably 50% of my hair.  I think it's been caused by multiple things--bad relationship=stress, work=stress, being a women and 48--hormones are wacky, starting/stopping/starting birthcontrol pills.  I've done this to myself.  I've been looking at wigs on the internet, because I'm sure I'll be wearing one eventually.  It's so hard being a women with thin hair.  It's very hard to style and make it look half way decent.

I was a vegetarian from age 40-43 and borderline anorexic,and ran everyday.  I'm back on a healthy diet that includes meat--but no red meat, and moderate exercise.  I weigh 108 and consume 80 to over 100 grams of protein, so I think I'm getting enough protein in my diet.

Hi I,ve recently lost 4st 3lb since August by taking part in a study to reverse type 2 diabetes with Newcastle University,

I completed the first 8 weeks with no problems, however since going back onto eating real food/calorie controlled diet approx 1400cals per day and now not eating meat I have noticed that I am losing handfuls of hair throughout the day!

Upon reading other posts I think I will try some multi-vitamins to see if that helps?
