Does alcohol slow your metobolism?

I saw that on another thread.   Is it true?

I am not 100% sure but- Alcohol can dehydrate you and dehydration slows your metabolism- so I would think it would.

Want to keep your favorite meals from going straight to your hips (thighs, belly)? Wash them down with water, not wine. Alcohol slows your metabolism by depressing the central nervous system. A British study found that when alcohol was added to a high-fat, high-calorie meal, less dietary fat was burned off and more was stored as body fat.
Alcohol dehydrates you - as people have already said - and additionally, think about it. All alcohol beverages are just fermented grains or fruits. It's sugar. So not only are you slowing down your body, you're drinking sugar water too!

If you don't like water, then I suggest Volvic's flavored water (or Aquafina's flavorsplash) - very low calories, but they're flavored and slightly sweet.
Oh my - I have never heard that before.  I just count the calories same as anything else but even in that respect they are no bargain!  I do like me a beer or a drink once in a while though, empty calories and all. 
I used to like to drink but now it's so NOT worth the calories at all. I can think of much better things to waste the beer calories on! :) Sugar plays a HUGE role in why people are overweight. It's in absolutely EVERYTHING out there! I have been watching my sugar/carb intake carefully and it has made a HUGE difference.

Personal anecdote: I've cut back to only 4 oz of wine per day, from about 10 oz... while keeping the same amount of calories (I make up the difference in healthy foods). I am now losing at a faster rate than I was before.

So yeah, I do think too much alcohol in some way reduces metabolism: it may simply be that you sleep lousier, or it effects your liver, or your body metabolizes the alcohol first and then stores the rest as fat, or it impacts your hormones.

But I'm not going to cut out alcohol entirely, because I've also read that in moderation alcohol can be a good thing, as it reduces stress and thus cortisol which helps battle belly fat. So a little each day can be a good thing. It's finding the right amount, and for me that seems to be 4 oz. It's really important to carefully measure out your portion though: I've found that eyeballing and guessing can be quite deceptive!

I don't think binge drinking (having lots of drinks in one evening) is ever good for weight loss though.
