How Does one Gain Weight, with High metabolism?

Okay I eat all day everyday, but apparently my metabolism just kicks in soon as I open my mouth, lol. I am trying to gain over 20 pounds I am currently 4''11 93lbs. Any suggestions?

eat high calorie foods...get more calories for less volume. go to a search engine and search "healthy high calorie foods" and you will get a nice list. You can also look into supplemental shakes that body builders use to gain weight.

are you recovering from an ED then?

how many calories do you have a day? i know how you feel with the eating all day thing. i feel that way sometimes. maybe you should try increasing your portion size... uhh this is part of an article lol so its naming off people and i dont know if all of these things are for you but something to think about.

  • Have meals with the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and the right kinds of fat (such as unsaturated and monounsaturated fats, olive oil, canola oil, pistachios, almonds and walnuts). Heinemann suggests the following ratio: 60%-70% carbohydrates, 10%-15% protein, and a small amount of fat.
  • Eat foods higher in calories, vitamins, and minerals, as opposed to higher in fat or sugar.
  • Pack more nutritious calories in each serving. For example, you may add grated cooked eggs to mashed potatoes, ground chicken to soups and gravies, cheese in casseroles, eggs, and soups, and nonfat dried milk in soups, shakes, milk, and mashed potatoes.
  • If you get too full too fast, try having more high-calorie foods or slices of foods as opposed to consuming the whole thing (raisins versus grapes, granola and Grape Nuts versus corn flakes, mango slices versus the whole mango).
  • Limit drinking beverages to a half-hour before and after a meal.
  • Drink mixed juices (apple/berry, peach/orange/banana as opposed to one juice beverages) for a higher calorie intake.
  • Try a small amount of alcohol (4 ounces of wine, 6 ounces of beer, or a half-ounce of liquor with juice) before a meal, as it could stimulate appetite. Moore warns, however, that this recommendation must be cleared with your doctor, especially if you are on any medication. Too much alcohol can be detrimental to health, and could lessen your resolve for eating healthy.
  • With moderation, you may add in good fat sources to meals such as nuts, avocado, olives, and fatty fish (salmon and mackerel).
  • Snack in between meals. Nuts, dried fruits, and yogurt are good options, but it's also important to find nutritious foods that you will enjoy.
  • Have a nutritious snack before bedtime, such as a peanut butter sandwich.

why are you trying to gain so much weight?? 113lbs is overweight for your, 15-20lbs overweight. if you are trying to gain 20lbs of pure muscle, lift weights 4-5 days a week, do a different area of your body EACH time and dont forget to REST because muscle isnt built in the gym. it's built in recovery. and i still dont think you can gain 20lbs of muscle (naturally and healthily) anyway.

I am not recovering from anything, no disorders or anything of that nature. I have always been small. I started on this gain weight thing. In the pass I've thought about it but never really looked into it. I am just tired of feeling tired, I want to get out of these 0's, I want a little more meat on my arms and thighs. I feel so small at times. Everyone thinks im a little I am so short and tiny. I have had two children and never got over 114, soon as I had them the weight was gone. According to this sight when I put in my weight and hieght and ideal weight, it put me at 1500-1600 calories a day, but thats for a pound a week. This would take forever. I also see others with 3000+ calories a day. So I am confused. I love most foods I am just not a big fan of breakfest. Any suggestions on this? I went to smoothie king this morning and got there hulk drink which for the small is 1095 calories, the only problem is its alot to drink and I am still working on I am still new at this so anything you or anyone else can offer as advice, Greatly appreciated! I think my metabolism is just high. It has to be.

how many calories do you consume daily on average? Do you exercise a lot?

eating more calorie dense foods (like nuts)  and more protein and weight lifting might help you to put some meat on your arms and thighs.

Try and keep what you eat to gain healthy so you don't develop bad habits. Even people w/high metabolisms have health problems like high cholesterol etc.

I bet you look perfect for your height. I am also very short and tiny. Most people don't realize that height adds a lot of weight and very short and small framed adult women do not need to weigh a lot to be very healthy. I would just eat three healthy full-filling meals a day. I am also trying to gain but stay around 95-100 pounds because of my bone structure. That sounds really thin to a lot of people but like I said MOST don't realize that our height does not require us to weigh the same as someone taller. You are probably very healthy and attractive. I also feel like a little girl at  28 years old. Most people treat me like one too. It is very frusturating but I dress mature and act very mature and I let people know their comments are hurtful and it is no ones business about you weight ot don't let people ask you these is very rude to ask an adult woman these things unless you are a close friend or family and you have the type of respectful relationship for this information.

I am also naturally thin and have NEVER had an eating disorder so I know it is harder for someone like ourselves to gain because it is not natural because of our body type.

I just love how everyone wants to assume ALL thin people have an eating disorder......and don't realize not everyone has one or that we are unhealthy just because we are small....... Notice I said small......there is a diefference between a woman who is small and undrweight.  I am perfectly healthy confirmed by my doctor and you probably are too but eating unhealthy foods is not healthy for anyone no matter what size.

 Ummmm... That is no where near overweight. Gaining 20 lbs would give her a BMI of 22.8, which is near-perfect. The acceptable range is 20-24.  She wants to gain weight so that she is no longer so tiny. It's a personal chice, and it should improve her health and make her stronger. (Of course, I don't know all of her info, so I can't say for sure, but most likely)

20 lbs. may or may not be overweight for her. We cannot see her in real life to make that call. Those BMI charts are not accurate and I have no idea why people go by them....just my opinion. And she didn't say that she was unhealthy. Why do people assume thin people are unhealthy? She could possibly harm her health more by gaining weight that is not natural to her body type.

I didn't say she was unhealthy either. I said it was likely that she would be stronger and improve health that was no necessarily bad to begin with.

I don't consider the BMI charts a bible. They do, however, make a decent general-guideline. Gaining 20 lbs would not make her overweight, regardless of her bone structure/shape/etc. It would make her bigger, but she obviously wants that.

As long as she gains the weight in a healthy manner, she will not harm her health. Building a bit more muscle isn't going to damage your health unless the circumstances are really bizarre.

It is possible 20 lbs. could make her overweight. I know this because I am the same as her weight and I am 5'1. If I gained 20 lbs. it would be overweight for me. If she has the same small bone structure as I do then it could. I feel strongly about what people comment to this young woman bacuse I am the same as her and have a high metabalism. I am very healthy and don't need to improve. I would like to gain a few pounds (not 20 lbs.) too but not if it in any way jeapordized my health. Some woman are naturally small- notice I say small not thin or underweight. I understand that she wants to gain 20 lbs. but their are a lot of woman who want to weigh a certain weight that doesn't mean it will or should happen.  I am trying to be supportive for her because I know how mean people can be in real life about a small woman. They think we don't eat or we have an ED and make stupid comments. 93 lbs. is not bad for a woman who is 4'11. People do not realize that at that height a woman does not need to weigh as much. Height adds quite a bit of weight. Maybe she could use a few pounds but maybe not 20 lbs. We don't know because like I said we can't see her in real life and see her body and see how much muscle vs. fat she has. Even at my weight I have a fat butt and thighs even though I am very very tiny. I need to excercise and tone up and then maybe I will gain a few pounds.

I know exactly how she feels. I hate being soooo tiny but that is the way GOD made me.  I am trying to give her advice to be happy with herself now the way she is. It is like society expects all woman to be the same weight. Either we are too skinny or too fat by everyone else.  I am not trying to attack here but help realize that peoples comments are not FACT and mine are not either but i completely relate to her. I have no ED and have a high metabalism and am short and same weight as her.

 That was more so the part that bothered me. Saying that gaining 20 lbs would make her 20 lbs overweight is the same as saying that is she gained 1 lb she would be 1 lb over weight.

I understand that 20 lbs is not necessarily going to be the right amount to gain for her height. I understand that she could be small framed and does not need to gain weight at all. I never said that she needs to gain weight. I said it could be beneficial (not that it would). However, I just felt like she shouldn't be old that what she wants is wrong when one does not actually know that it would make her overweight.

And regardless of how small her frame is, I still maintain that gaining 20 lbs would not make her overweight. It would make her bigger, maybe even chubby, but not actually overweight. Especially if it was mostly muscle.

Okay, I'm done.

I say go with whatever makes you feel healthy.  I want to gain 20lbs so I don't end up in the emergency room for loosing 10 if I were to get sick.  My suggestion is to count your calories.  I felt like I was eating all the time but I wasn't taking in enough calories.  I'm struggling to get to 2000 calories a day.  In another posts someone said your body needs at least 1200 calories to burn without any sort of exercise. 

Another idea, maybe the foods your eating don't have enough carbohydrates or protein.

Go to's Womens Nutrition Guide.  It will help you break it down into how much of each of those you might need.  I hope this is hopeful.

I can understand your frustration and sympathize with you as I have the same problem. I'm 4'10" and only 103 pounds on a good day. The most I have ever weighed is 106 and that was after a day of eating a lot. What has helped me is breakfast shakes. They're very filling and high in calories. They taste even better when you add in frozen fruit and whole milk in a blender with it and have it every morning. I've been doing this for about a week and have been gaining weight, not too fast, but enough to say that its working. I'm trying to gain 30 to 50 pounds. Now before any of you lecture me on how that is unhealthy for me, I'll let you know that you are in no position to tell me such things unless you are a professional doctor or dietitian and have been over all of my health problems. I lose weight faster than anyone I have every met and I don't even try. For most people who are over weight and struggle with losing, that would be heaven. For someone who has been tiny their whole life and has struggled with gaining or maintaining a healthy weight its a nightmare. Like someone else mentioned earlier, getting sick and losing weight can be detrimental to my health. As well as a health issue, I am sick of the jokes and looks as I grocery shop alone or even hold the hand of my boyfriend outside. I don't have a strong enough personality to tell them off and that its none of their business how old I am, how short or skinny I am. That has always resulted in me being shot down and turned into a bad guy for not answering a personal question. Being so small, people take advantage of my height and ridicule me or push me down when I try to stand up for myself, or feel the need to help me with whatever I'm doing just because I look like I shouldn't be able to do it. I'm not happy with my size and no one should tell anyone that they shouldn't gain or lose weight if they want to.

I feel you, sweetiecakes. I'm also 4'11" and feel super thin and weak at anything below 113 (I'm 20 years old). I used to be 97 pounds a few years ago and it was a nightmare. I felt so unhealthy and unhappy at that weight, despite it being a technically healthy BMI according to the charts. I feel my healthiest between 118-123, and try to stay in that range most of the time. And to people who would say that that is overweight for my height: no, it is perfectly in range of a healthy BMI, and it looks good on my body. I am still very thin and in shape and not chubby at all, but most importantly, I feel healthy and happy and strong. Weight distributes differently on different people, so please do not go around telling people that they will be overweight at a healthy BMI when they are currently near underweight. Clearly the OP wants to gain and to improve her health by doing so. It is difficult sometimes for people who have never been underweight or near it to understand how sickly and tired it can make you feel, despite your health being otherwise fine.

OP, I do strongly suggest eating between 3000-4000 calories per day. You can add some weight training to help build muscle, but I'd mostly stay away from cardio while you're trying to gain. Remember to eat more if you exercise! Calorie dense foods are your friends. Go to town on nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut, full fat dairy, etc. They will add calories to your diet without filling you up too much. Drink fresh fruit juice and other liquid calories. Ensure is a great drink to have a few times a day that will help you gain weight. Your diet should be about 30% healthy fats. Drizzle olive oil on your food or have it with a spoonful of peanut butter to help boost fat and calories. I mix nut butter into everything and eat coconut butter by the spoonful (it's my favourite!). Eat mostly healthy foods, but don't shy away from the desserts and such. I do avoid artificial ingredients however, as they they give me an upset stomach which isn't very much fun. Artificial sugars especially are the worst for my stomach.

I would suggest getting checked out by a doctor, as there are some medical problems that prevent absorption of nutrients into your body, in which case a good bit of what you are eating may just be passing through you without your body getting the benefits of the nutrition and calories from your food.
