I made these burgers over the Fourth of July Holiday & they were very delicious, so I wanted to share.
1 16 oz. can of black beans
1/2 green bell pepper
3 cloves of garlic
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 teaspoon hot sauce
1/2 cup bread crumbs
Drain & rinse black beans. In a medium bowl, mash the beans with a fork until they are thick and pasty.
Finely chop bell pepper, onion & garlic & stir into the mashed beans.
In a small bowl, beat the egg, stir in the chili powder, cumin and hot sauce.
Stir the egg mixture into the beans & veggies. Add breadcrumbs.
Divide into four patties. You can grill them (on foil) or put them in the oven for about 10 minutes on each side or cook them in a skillet.
This receipe ends up being about 230 calories per burger. I put them on a sandwich thin & add reduced fat cheese. They are filling, fresh & delicious! Enjoy!

Funny how I stumbled upon this. I was having random cravings last week and I bought two big bags of raw black beans, lol. Haven't opened a bag. I will definitely open them tomorrow!
Question: Will they turn out fine without the breadcrumbs? And is the bean patty 230 calories? or the whole burger (cheese and bread included)?
Such a good idea. I love veggie burgers but always wanted to make them more filling...and I love black beans.

Neltueliel- Just the patty is 230 calories. You will have to add the cheese and bread separately.
I think you need the breadcrumbs to help thicken the patty, but it might be worth trying without....
If you do, let me know how it turns out.
I used plain black beans...had to soak and cook them myself. It almost took 4 hours! I used the seasonings and onions you suggested. I didn't have any breadcrumbs or bell pepper though. So I used oats and mushrooms instead. The patties were very thick and very yummy! The ones I made are probably close to 200 calories. Packed with protein and of course that's a good thing!

You can substitute rice for the breadcrumbs.
This sounds really good. It would be wonderful with some fresh red or green salsa on the burger and lots of lettuce too. I will need to try these soon.

What temperature would you set the oven at? I want to try that.
I make mine with out bread crumbs and they stay together just fine.
I've made this before and it is very good. I have baked in the oven at 350 for about 20 min. I have also cooked on a skillet on top of the stove with a little olive oil. you could use pam spray. about the breadcrumbs i hadn't thought about not using them. but i'm thinking flaxmeal would work great and an added health benefit, or maybe oats, also maybe 2 egg whites instead of a whole egg would cut out the cholesteral. I used red curry powder...has chilli powder, cumin and curry in it and curry is very good for you. good with a salad and salsa and also guacamole. Yummy, i think i'll try my own suggestions this weekend. enjoy
This recipe sounds great, I will have to try it with flourless bread for the bread crumbs!
Sad to see that people are still afraid of egg yokes though. Eggs are a super food, very nutritious. You do not develop high cholesterol from eating eggs.
