How many workout at gym more than 4 hours a day, 7 days a week

I started back in October, I burn between 2000 and 3000 cal a day. Along with 3 bad disc and some pain pills. I'm legally handicap and have never received a surgery. I started on the Arc Trainer now I'm up to level 10 and top pounds of 100. I can run this machine for 4 hours with no problems. I've started looking at the YMCA's other machines. The step master, high inpact I can only run every other for 1 hour. Eliptical 1 hour level 15, and the EFX low inpact I can run for hours too. In the end I back to full strength and hoping to return to full time employment. I've lost 20 pounds since I started 3 months ago.  I see people float in everyday, they stay around 1 hour and a half. I only wished people could remember back to childhood and recall their many hours of active play.

Come on people if you want rewards to must work hard for them.

Can anyone match this...I'd like to hear from you...

Most pro athetles  likely don't come close to 4 hours a day.

I'd suggest you are risking over training.

Rest is highly under rated.

Hell I was a professional Bowler, 25 games a day in top shape! I fall at work hurt my back...I also worked at a bread factory 10 hours a day....

I know what it takes.....Ask any professional athletic person...what it takes to get there...
i'm not sure that you get more results from a steady-paced repetitive motion workout past a certain point in time. altho i dont know what point in time that is, and im sure it varies per person. do you change up the pace at all? you might get more results out of shorter duration workouts with varied intensities. thats alot of time in the gym! *congratulations* nonetheless on all your progress. you go!

Tina, what you're suggesting in unhealthy, and sounds an awful lot like 'Exercise Bulimia'

How many calories do you take in a day? Do you eat 4000 calories a day, which is what you probably need if you're burning 2500 calories a day. Probably more.

In typical, if you're exercising more than 3 hours a day, you're actually OVERstressing your body. Read and understand this (from the above-linked article)

Exercising too much can cause all kinds of problems including:

  • Injuries such as stress fractures, strains and sprains
  • Low body fat - this may sound good but, for women, it can cause some serious problems. Exercising too much can cause a woman's period to stop which can cause bone loss
  • Fatigue
  • Dehydration
  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis
  • Reproductive problems
  • Heart problems
Some of these symptoms also apply to overtraining but if you're obsessed with exercise and use it as a way to undo bad eating on a regular basis, it isn't something you can tackle alone. Many compulsive exercisers find they need therapy to help them deal with exercise bulimia. To get started, call you doctor or check out these online support groups to talk with other people experiencing the same problems:

Thank You, I have more days with no pain now, I'm building strength and working on endurence .  3 months ago I could'nt walk down the street. Today I feel so healthy that I don't care if I loose any weight just as long as I can gain strength.  It's a miracle I'm walking, before I started I could'nt feel my left foot because of nerve damage.  Excerise has changed my life... Now there's others at the gym that work along with me daily, they stay I have the drive they need, were all doing great and enjoy each others daily gossip....
Hkellick I wished someone would tell Stroemans bakery about this condition. They'd have to hire 50 more people to do the work we did.  Also If I listened to every doctor out there I'd be in a wheel chair right now...You are speaking to someone that has and will always be a top preformer now and always.  I have nothing to loose...Each of us have our own levels.

When It comes to diet, I eat vegs,meat,fruits and things that are good for me... When I'm hungry I eat...I'm 43 so I don't have a high cal intake at this point...

I will keep posting daily.... The good and the bad, then you can all draw your on conclusions.

My boyfriend is an ultramarathoner (50k or more) and triathlete ... the events may last a minimum of 7-9 hours each...but he NEVER trains for more than 2 hours at a time, and NEVER every single day without a rest day or two!! This is because he knows that this is the most effective way, and the only healthy way to condition the body for optimal performance.
4 hours of exercise a day may not be hurting you now, but it's not exactly helping you either.   And there is absolutely no reason that anyone else should feel compelled to follow your example.  If you continue to do so, that's certainly your choice.

But please, anyone else reading and considering this needs to take a hard look at some of the above posts and the dangers of over exercising.  45-60 minutes of cardio daily, with rest days on occasion, is all that anyone needs for optimal weight loss or maintenance.

webechillinman - I sincerely doubt the employees of Stroemans bakery are doing high impact, high heart rate continual work day in and day out.  There are plenty of people who can sustain 'activity' all day long - that's what our bodies are made for.  Think back a couple of hundred years, we are not meant to be sedentary.  But to maintain an elevated heart rate for hours on end day in and day out is completely different and is not recommended.  Your costs are far exceeding your benefits when you do not partake of adequate rest.

What also has not been mentioned is that if you're training the same muscle groups that much, you're going to be in a continious state of repair as far as your muscles go. This means that at no point will you gain muscle mass. You recover every night (only partially) and then each day you destroy the previous days work.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but you're not going to gain nearly the strenght that you would if you'd take a day or two (or three) off inbetween.
All I know is that I'd die of boredom running on some machine at the Y for 4 hours.  Now if I was outside walking or running, it would be better, but still too long for me.  I hear that you've gotten results for your body that are incredible, but is the last 2 1/2 hours really necessary for the results or is it just extra unneeded exertion.  And how long will you be able to keep these workouts up?  I'd quit out of boredom or injury eventually.

I personally do dance aerobics.  I have injuries myself and have to stick to low impact moves, although I work hard to get my heartrate up, it is harder to get it up in low impact aerobics, but if I hurt my knee again I'll be doing nothing.
Overtraining aside, how many people have 4 hours a day to dedicate to running like a hamster on a wheel?

  I confess to being one of those poor souls who "drifts" into the gym, does a 35 minute weight train, does 30 minutes of HIIT cardio, gets her kids, and goes home to take care of the rest of life.  Goodness sakes.  If I have time, I might hit the track, or swim for half an hour (oooh, I do love swimming!).  That's sometimes a 120 minute YMCA visit, but those are rare. 

Congratulations on your progress so far.  Perhaps there are other things you could try that wouldn't require hours of peddling going nowhere?  Aerobics, Yoga, weight training?  Maybe switch to HIIT?
I would die, not just from bordom but I think my heart would quit.

I try to get an hour worth of cardio 5 days a week and do pilates 3 days a week and if I don't get my rest....I'm exhausted and a total B!*%h. I need those recovery days
