Malnourished gaining weight on 1200 cals a day!

I used to be pretty sick with a lot of digestive issues and at one point got down to below 90 lbs (5'6) because I had constant parasites and malabsorbtion issues. It's been a long journey and I finally found a great doctor to help figure out my problems! I am proud to say I am finally absorbing nutrients and have gained my health back! However, I have gained weight very quickly and am now at 112 lbs. I am curious why I could possibly gain 12 pounds in 3 months just by eatings all vegetables! My doctor wants me to stay on his vegan diet while i heal, and I know that I must eat around 1200 calories a day. I would be shocked if it were more!


My days look like this:

Green smoothie with protein powder in morning or two pieces of ezekial toast

salad or steamed veggies with olive oil for lunch

roasted vegetable salad for dinner

a handful of nuts and some dried fruit- i never go overboard though


Is it true that when your body is healing and was so malnourished that the weight gain can be fast no matter how many cals you eat? It definitely is going to my stomach. I should also mention that I run 4 miles 5 times a week and do yoga! I don't get why I would gain on this type of diet but its frustrating because I don't want to gain anymore than this.


Is it true that you cant loose eating such a low amount of calories? Or is it true that this might be related to my vegan diet and not eating enough "protein?" Thanks for the help, I really would love to understand the science behind this!

Hi Veggielover,

I know this is easier said then done, but your body is in starvation mode and clinging on to every calorie.  If you need to stay on this diet, you need to stop the exercise, because your body needs more than 1,200 calories a day just to function.  Try eating some tofu with you veggies.
