If you are not eating enough, maybe your body is hanging on to most of what you do eat and you aren't creating any waste.
If you don't FEEL like you have to, then maybe you don't. I used to work at a pharmacy and people would come in for glycerine suppositories because they felt strongly that they should "shat" at least once a day. There is no rule that says you MUST do this a certain amount of times within a certain time frame.
You should check with your doctor just to be sure you don't have a condition or some sort of blockage.
Make sure you are getting enough WATER, not getting enough water makes things hard/dry and hard to move along, and can help cause a blockage. Same thing if you aren't getting enough fats/oils.
If you feel like you gotta go and you just need a little help, I know there are a few things that can help: Coffee, Oatmeal, Coconut Milk, Prunes, and over the counter things like metamucil or ... glycerine suppositories.
- Buy a laxative. Senea leaf extract is a godsend for people with constipation. Take it in herbal tea form or in tablets. There are even senea chocolate bars out in the drugstore. Don't eat the whole bar if you're getting choc-cravings, though ;)
- Add more fibre and lots of water to your diet. Coarse wheat bran can be added to cereal, yogurt, soups,... anything, and it's very high in fibre. Alternatively, try psyllium husks. That's 98% fibre in powdered form that can be added water and chugged down. But, be careful: Fibre without lots of water = constipation.
- Eat more! I know that the thought of eating more scares some people to death when all they want is to loose pounds as quickly as possible, but a lifestyle change isn't a quick fix!
- Eat... bulkier things. I know from experience that when I had a lot of dairy, things just wouldn't move. Dairy has little fibre and lots of water, with very little bulk to it.
Original Post by elbowsmgee:
i eat...800 calories a day on average, and i haven't "shat" (a verb my friend uses) in a week, and that was just because of heavy drinking the night before. in fact, the only times i've done it in the past 3 weeks is after a night of being wasted. not good, i know, but what does this mean exactly? i know i'm not eating enough, i'm working on it. or at least planning on working on it, but i'm trying to eat really high-fiber foods, and it hasn't seemed to help thus far.
You're literally not eating enough. You can't have a bowel movement if there's nothing to get rid of.
Not including enough fats and liquids into your diet are also factors that contribute to constipation. But the bottom line is, you're going to continue to be constipated until you start to eat the right amount of food.
I really hope that you decide to do yourself a favor and fix this now. Without regular "shatting", your digestive track just starts to get messed up. Do not use laxatives unless you have an okay from your doctor, or you could really mess up your system.
i agree that taking a laxitive is not a good idea but...there are stool softeners that work really well...they don't have the stimulant effect that laxatives do they actually soften up your stool...making it easier to pass...you may need to do them for a few days...oh, and EAT MORE CALORIES!! AGAIN, you can't poo if you have nothing to poo out!!!
also, i drink "poopie water" as my 4 year old calls it (metimucil) in the evening with my vitamins and then by the morning, with my coffee, i take refuge in the pottie!! but i also consume approx 2300 calorieds per day and exercise regularly (not fanatically just regularly!
good luck with all that and happy pooping!
Yes, I agree with everyone above. According to the CC guidelines, women should not take in any less than 1200 calories a day. If you don't eat enough your body is going to latch on to what you do eat - meaning you won't have any waste to get rid of.
If you do eat more calories and you still can't go, there is something we (at the hospital) refer to as the 'brown bomb.' That is Milk of Magnesium and prune juice mixed together. If that doesn't make you go, then I would suggest seeing a doctor.
More than likely, in your case, if you eat more you will be able to go.
anyway, have fun with your cat. and thanks again for your sensitivity.
hi i have this same problem. its just hereditary. i have been to many specialist and trust me i know how uncomftrable it is wen you cant go to the bathroom! your stomach begins to swell and ache. its hard to be active and it also suppresses your appetite! IT SUCKS! i feel you!
there are alot of things i do to deal with this
one is this amazing colon cleanse called dr. natura. you can order it online. its basicly a tea at night. colon cleansin pills in the morning and a fiber after a week it will get you going. you can stay on this for about everyother three months
the next is lots of fiber! but wen i say that that also means lots of water!!!!!! beacuse if you dont drink tons of water to flush out the fiber it will actulay build up in your sister and clog things up
there are many teas you can take and natural supplements you can find at your local health food store
talk to a dr! and on days where you just feel like it aches and pains then on your last resort use a laxative. an enema realy works well and also milk of magnesia. but i strongly recommend that you use these only wen you havent gone in a long time and its very uncomftrable other wise the body gets used to a laxative and you will have to take one every time to go! not good
anyways i know this problem is a pain and i hope this helped
