Here on CC, we are a community all about health, well-being and healthy weight management, and support those that are recovering from an eating disorder. And you may see this and immediately think of the big three, most commonly recognised eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. But there is a lot more to disordered eating than just these three classifications:

ED-NOS (Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified)
Compulsive overeating, sometimes known as emotional eating,
Compulsive over-exercising or exercise bulimia
Prader-Willi Syndrome
Night Eating Syndrome
Sleep Eating Disorder (SED-NOS)
Orthorexia Nervosa

Each of these is just as severe as any other form of disordered eating.

Admission of an eating disorder is a huge, huge step, but it is the first of many on the road to recovery. Recovery is much easier done with help and with a team than on your own. If you are in doubt of yourself, there is a questionnaire here that you can fill out to help clarify things: Signs of an Eating Disorder Questionnaire

But the first most vital thing to do when you suspect you may have an eating disorder is to go and speak to a doctor. There are many health risks related with all kinds of disordered eating: Dangers of Eating Disorders.

If not a doctor, then a loved one that you trust, a good friend, a clergy member, a teacher or school/college counsellor. Your family and friends can all find support just as much as you may need it.

In any eating disorder it is important to focus on getting the right balance of nutrition and a good relationship with food back overall. While the team you set yourself up with will help you in this you might want to wizen up on nutrition yourself. The right balance of food is absolutely vital, making sure you get all the food groups you need, essential vitamins and minerals, as well as including “fun” foods in moderation throughout your days. Ultimately, there are no bad foods - just bad diets. Everything in moderation!

In the case of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, if you are underweight, you may find that refeeding - the process of gaining weight - will mean you will require more calories than you may expect. Generally, a good number to aim for when gaining weight is a baseline of 2500 calories utterly sedentary when female, and 3000 calories utterly sedentary when male. You may find you need a lot more than even these two base numbers.

"CONCLUSIONS: To maintain stable weight after weight restoration, restricting anorexic patients require a significantly higher caloric intake than do bulimic anorexic patients. Differences in caloric needs between normal-weight bulimic patients with and without histories of anorexia may depend on the methods used to correct caloric requirements. Body surface area may be the most precise correction factor across different subgroups of eating disorder patients. Elevated caloric requirements, when coupled with reduced food intake, may particularly contribute to relapse in anorexic patients." Am J Psychiatry. 1991 Dec;148(12):1675-82."
