Causes of high diastolic pressure...

Due to really bad genetics, I have hypertension. I was diagnosed @ 25. I am one of six people in my family that has it, including my younger brother. My systolic pressure (top number) has always been in the low 150's. However, my diastolic pressure (bottom number) has always been in the high 70's to low 80's. I have always been told by doctors, nurses, etc that unless your systolic is really high like over 180, all that matters is your diastolic. Since mine has always been fine, I was never worried before. However, in the last few months, my diastolic has been consistently in the low to mid 90's. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could cause my diastolic pressure to be so elevated? The ironic thing is that my systolic is finally down a bit (high 130's to low 140's).

One thing I came across online is that a diet high in fat will raise diastolic pressure. I will admit that my diet is high in fat (90-100g per day). However, it all comes from healthy sources like olive oil, fish oil, natural peanut butter, almonds, etc.. With that being said, since the majority of my fat is healthy, would it still cause my diastolic to be elevated?

Is your weight in the normal range? I assume you don't have White Coat hypertension.  Do you check your BP at home? How's your Na intake? Have you had some sort of lifestyle change? Do you smoke? That is a high fat intake.  That means there's a lot of calories.  And if the nuts and peanut butter are salted then that's a lot of Na.  Anyway, just throwing stuff out there. 

Actually, I may have always had white coat hypertension in the past. I have always been nervous when taking my blood pressure. I always had 120/80 my whole life up until I was 25. Then I had one high reading when I was sick, and it made me start developing a high blood pressure phobia. I know that it is completely irrational because I eat an extremely clean diet (5 servings fruit and 5 servings of veggies per day, plenty of whole grains, low sodium levels, healthy fats, lean proteins, etc), I get cardiovascular exercise regularly (5X per week), and I work an active job (personal trainer) so I am not sedentary either. However, I just can't calm down when taking my blood pressure. With how health conscious I am, my doctor just wrote it off to genetics since it runs in my family.

However, from my understanding white coat mainly effects the systolic. Since I knew I had a blood pressure phobia I just figured the elevated systolic was white coat and since my diastolic was always 80 or lower, I was never worried before. However, now that my diastolic is creeping up into the low to mid 90's, it has me worried.

- In regards to calories : It takes 3500 just to maintain my weight, so I take in 3000 cals per day. I weigh 235, but my body fat is below 15%. Last time I had it measured it was 13%. I am trying to get under 10%, hence eating at a deficit.

- Don't smoke.

- As I said above, I eat very clean, and keep my sodium levels low. I even use "no salt added tomato sauce" and the only nuts that I eat are almonds and non salted peanuts which both have extremely low sodium. The peanut butter is natural so its sodium content is low as well.

- I monitor my BP 3x per week @ home.

- The only major lifestyle change I have had is getting hired at a new training facility 6 months ago. However, it is closer to home, pays better, and I get benefits as well. Not to mention the fact that my client list is double what it was at my old training facility. So I don't feel any stress about the job whatsoever.

Do you have anxiety? Anxiety and/or stress can raise BP. Do you feel nervous when taking your BP at home?

Do you take it first thing when you wake up and then before you go to bed? BP rises throughout the day and falls back down as it ends.

What about your kidneys? Are they healthy? If everything is as you say and there are no predisposing factors besides heredity then it might be necessary for you to go on medication to control your BP.  High BP is deadly to your kidneys and heart and brain, which I'm sure you know.  Are you eating a lot of protein too?

The last time I had my kidneys checked they were healthy and even though I do have a high protein diet, I drink a gallon of water a day. It has been awhile since I got a physical though so I am going to make an appointment with the doctor soon to get some lab work done.

Life is unfair sometimes though. At work, I take people's blood pressure all the time and people who are extremely obese with terrible diets and over 40% body fat have perfect blood pressure. Even my dad is lucky in that sense. He is extremely obese, smokes a pack a day, eats red meat and butter by the truckload, never exercises, and his blood work is perfect. His cholesterol and BP are both fine. Then you have me with crappy blood pressure and I eat perfectly, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and I lead a healthy lifestyle (no drinking, smoking, etc).

Hi I know this post is old but I am having the same problem. I don't smoke or drink, I workout 6 days a week and I'm trying to eat cleaner. I am 118 pounds and I'm trying to gain a little weight. My diastolic is high, my bp systolic is between 108 to 120 and diastolic is mid 80's to high 90's. Any food plans or solutions would be appreciated. Thank you

I read this article which made me go yikes! pressure/news/20140529/heart-risks-depend-on- which-blood-pressure-number-is-high-study


But then I read this study, which suggests that the clinical method of measuring BP may result in slightly higher measured values of DBP in people where the ratio of (SBP-DBP)/SBP is less than 0.45 (people with a narrower range, so to speak). So the DBP measure may be exaggerated. 


Then I read this editorial which made it sound like the DBP had minimal significance compared to the SBP, in current thinking.


I am now totally confused.
