How much sodium is considered right to consume in a day?

Without adding salt to anything, I am noticing it seems like everything has so much sodium in it. I really want to try and watch my sodium intake because of risk of high blood pressure. What is considered normal or safe to consume in a day, does anyone know? Thanks!

Maximum of 2,300 mg for healthy people and 1,500 mg or less for those with high blood pressure or congestive heart failure.

I have to limit my sodium too. That's why I seldom buy packaged foods. I cook nearly everything from scratch. I'm what they call a perimeter shopper - I buy most of my groceries from the aisles around the perimeter of the supermarket - produce, diary, meats, fish & poultry. I read labels and reject anything with too much salt. If you look carefully there are products out there with no added salt - I get no salt added tomatoes all the time. Watch out though - some products are tasteless, like the low sodium canned soups - better to make a pot of home made soup!

doesnt it depend on the height/weight/lifestyle of the person? or no matter what it has to be max 2300...because Im at 3600!! but Im very tall and big boned ....
Daily values for sodium (as well as cholesterol and potassium) remain the same regardless of the calorie expenditure. What does change height and weight are nutrients that contribute calories like carbs, fats, and protein.
Is it possible to eat too little sodium? I have just checked my overall sodium intake and its about 850 a day! I tend to get headaches sometimes later in the you think this might have something to do with it?
You must have a very limited diet to only ingest 850 mg a day!  I would think your body needs a minimal amount of sodium just like any other mineral. 
I'm just quite small lol 5ft 2" so I don't need all that much food, I eat a lot of fruit and veg and try to cook meals from scratch, which I guess might help.
I did the 'six week body makeover diet' once, which I enjoyed, but it was much to restrictive for me to be able to stick with it.  You have to make 100% of everything from scratch to really be in compliance, largely because of how big of a deal he makes about sodium. 

Point being, when I was doing that diet I was getting next to none by eating all fresh foods that naturally had no sodium at all or very little sodium - and I felt great. 

But, check out this article which says:

"The National Academy of Sciences states that the average human adult requires a minimum of 500 to 1000 milligrams of sodium per day. A daily sodium intake between 1,100 and 3,300 milligrams is considered safe and adequate, according to these standards. This is equal to the amount of sodium in approximately ½ to 1½ teaspoons of table salt. In actuality, the average American consumes 2,500 to 5,000 milligrams per day. Some scientists are concerned about the amount of salt in processed foods. On report suggests that seventy-five percent of the sodium consumed is in processed foods"
Anything, carried to an extreme is usually not healthy.  I think there was a question about too little sodium, so thanks for the great information.
