How many servings of fruits & vegetables do you eat daily?

And how big is a serving? Would 5 medium strawberries be a serving?

How much of each do you eat? I am curious to see if people are eating more than the recommended amount, and whether you are eating more vegetables than fruit or vise versa.

I can't answer your serving size question but I know I eat 11 servings of a California Blend veggie thing. Like the bags of veggies with the broccoli, cauliflower and carrots you buy at the store. one bag has 11 servings and I am so addicted to the things I have to eat a bag a day.

I have a iceberg salad with lunch and dinner, a bigger salad with bunch of greens for a snack, and I eat some kind of fruit or two a day for snack. I have no idea how many servings that is. The "recommended" amount is the bare minimum. Fruits and veggies are great! :)

I definitely eat A LOT of veggies and fruits throughout the day, they make up the majority of my intake! I think eating more than the recommended minimum amount of servings is healthy, as long as you obviously stay within the calorie limit and also eat protein, fat and carbs of course. I probably eat like 8 servings of veggies a day haha!

A serving of strawberries is one cup.  One cup, sliced, is only about 50 calories, so it's a bargain. 

I have two fruits a day and 4 vegetables.  Usually I have a full cup of two of the vegetables (one of dark leafy greens) and half a cup of things like carrots, beets, winter squash, or other more starchy vegetables.

I eat 6-8 servings of fruit a day, and 4-6 veggies. One small-medium piece of fruit is a serving, but a large one (like those gargantuan frankenfood bananas and apples) are two. One cup of strawberries is about seven or eight medium strawberries. One serving of raspberries, blackberries or blueberries is 3/4 cup. One serving of leafy greens is one cup. One half cup of cooked vegetables of any kind is one serving.

I started a thread like this in the YCC forum last week.

Anyway, the USDA or whoever says a serving size for small fruit like strawberries is a half cup. But a whole fruit like a banana or apple counts as one serving each :]

I generally eat a lot more fruits than vegetables because I snack on them all day, plus I make smoothies a lot. But I do eat at least 1 serving of vegetables a day.

I usually eat 5-10 servings of fruit/veg every day.  With a minimum of 1 fruit (though rarely that low) and 3 veg.  A typical day for me would probably include 3 servings of fruit and 4 servings of vegetables (where I'm considering 100 g to be a serving - except for light leafy veg like lettuce and spinach which are 50 g to a serving).

As suspected the replies are from people who do eat plenty of fruit and veg.  I noticed a similar trend on the grams of fibre per day query.

I like to shoot for eating at least 3 serves of fruit and 3 of veg everyday.  Usually I eat more, especially in summer because of all the fruit.  Setting a goal helps me remember to incorporate them into my daily menu :)  

I eat tons and tons of veggies every day! :) It all equates to about 35 to 50 grams of fiber a day! Oh and I don't eat any fruit - it's ALL VEGGIES!

TONIGHT I will have LOADS OF steamed cabbage & spinach!

Yep.  That's human nature for you!  :-)

How about an example of a vegetable hater (my dad) who I'm working on getting up to 5 servings a day.  So far, we're up to:

  • 1 cup orange juice daily (1 fruit)
  • small handful of dates daily (1 fruit)
  • 1 tomato or about 4 cherry tomatoes daily (1 veg)
  • peas and/or carrots 2-3 times per week (peas are practically the only green vegetable he'll eat)
  • fruit-based dessert 1-2 times per week (pavlova, crumble, that sort of thing; enough fruit to make 1 serving)
  • tomato-based sauce for spaghetti or similar 1-2 times per week (will also incorporate onions)

He considers the raisins in his raisin bran to count as another serving.  I question that there's enough (though his bowls are mighty big!)

So, he's at a minimum of 3 servings per day (admittely includes 1 fruit juice and 1 dried fruit) and usually at 4-5 servings on the weekend when I have more influence over his diet.  He also eats potatoes, but I don't let him count those as part of the 5 servings.

Let's see...I've begun slicing a large banana or about 1/2 cup of quartered strawberries in my cereal and milk every morning.  I always have a piece of fruit at lunch.  Depending on my lunch I will have a thick slice of tomato and onion each, plus two leaves of lettuce on a meat sandwich....or sliced banana with peanut butter.  Also if we have them in the house I have a serving of baby carrots at lunch too.  At dinner I most definately have two servings of vegetables.  For dessert I often have several strawberries. The number depends on the size.

 Is the spaghetti sauce homemade?... You could add grated carrots, finely diced/grated zucchini, (finely) chopped spinach and of course onions as you said while simmering whole tomatoes, garlic, and spices in the pot. Takes up to 30 minutes, depending on how much flavor you want. Though I've made it in 15 minutes twice on med high heat, the flavor doesn't come out as much. Love this and I don't feel so guilty that I did not add as much veggies when I just want a plate of spaghetti and garlic bread. This is also fantastic as a pizza sauce as well!

As for OP- I try to get at least 6 fruits and vegetables every day, preferably more veggies than fruits if possible. Servings- hmm I tend to try to be more careful when munching on fruit but not as much as vegetables. Yesterday, I just made a big bowl of chopped cantaloupe, pineapple and watermelon to be kept in fridge for whenever. Steamed broccoli and green beans with just a dash of lemon pepper, mmm!!!
