oatmeal lovers club!

i looooooooove oatmeal. i eat it like twice a day! breakfast and in between meals as snacks!

what are your favorite brands and flavors? and how do you like your oatmeal?

my favoritie the high fiber cinnamon swirl and the strawberries and cream by quaker.

kashi ones have impressive nutritional values with protein and fiber, but i find them to be a bit bland!

The commercial packages of oatmeal I see contain 50-60% sugar and are chock full with all kinds of ingredients I can't pronounce and wouldn't eat. I've never seen the Kashi one's but you probably find them bland because they don't have as much sugar.  When you are eating Quaker Oatmeal for example, you really are just eating sugar, with a little oatmeal and some chemicals and preservatives thrown in for good measure.

I prefer to make my own, from scratch, with several different grains at the same time.  I use stuff like oatmeal, oatbran, spelt flakes, quinoa flakes, wheat germ, scotch oatmeal, red river cereal, flax seed, wheat germ...and on and on.  I add frozen berries for sweetness, sometimes a little carob powder also for sweetness and a real chocolate flavour.  I usually top it with rice or soy milk and sometimes with some honey or maple sugar when I'm not concerned about my weight.  I make enough for 3 days and just reheat it the second and third day.

if i had all the time in the world, i would go out looking for that stuff but i dont...

not real concerned with my weight, i just love oatmeal. as for the sugars and preservatives stuff, i could care less. ive been eating oatmeal for years and it hasnt given me any health issues yet!

"Yet" is the key  By the time "yet" happens, it might be too late to do anything about it...

Oh and this stuff is probably in the same store you shop in now, you just have to look in a different aisle...

i exercise strenously daily and watch my caloric intake. i dont think ill be having issues with my weight anytime soon. im a gym nut. 3 hours a day, 6 days a week!

Well why didn't you say that?  Someone who exercises that intensely and for such a long time, can eat almost anything and still be healthy...for a while.  You burn lots of calories quickly.   But I still believe, in spite of your current lack of weight issues, that the better you eat, the better off you will be.   The less processed food you eat, the better you will be.  It's not just about weight gain, that's just the obvious thing. There are all kinds of things that happen inside your body that may not show up for years.  I see it happening to people all around me in their 30's and 40's and a couple of them are gym nuts like you too, they just don't eat right....

i try not to eat a lot of sugary foods. i am extremely health conscious and i watch my intake and make sure i exceed my fiber intake and protein intake daily while maintaining 1200 to 1400 cals a day.

its actually quite sad how extreme i can be with food that i plan my meals for the next day. every 2 hrs or so. but i just wanted to point out that i love outmeal haha.

im completely aware of how i should eat right. if anything, im a freak about it all!

Unless your exercise in a gym is watching other people you are way way under of what you should be eating.


I like the Kashi, even if it is bland, because it is SO filling and good :) Sometimes I add half a banana, or 1/2 tbsp peanut butter to take away from the 'blandness'. Actually, though, my favorite additive is just cinnamon.

If you want to try it, you could add a package of your oatmeal to the Kashi (kashi is only 150cals) and that would take away from the blandness and give you all that protein and fiber. This is what I told my sister to do, because she needs more protein in the morning and none of the others really have much protein at all.

The only Kashi one that I have tried is the Vanilla....have you tried their honey cinnamon, by chance?

Johnny, Kashi has pretty low sugar, 6g per serving.

oh yessssssss.. i looove the honey and cinnamon one, but the vanilla one has extra fiber and extra protein so i go with that. ive gotten used to the kashi one over time. i look forward to it every morning!

My favorite is a homemade Dry Instant Oatmeal Mix.  My boys love it too, so I put 1/2 cups in baggies for them to make on their own.  All the yumminess without any of the chemicals and preservatives.  And a whole lot cheaper than buying the packets.

  • 6 cups quick-cooking oats
  • 1 1/3 cups nonfat dry milk powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

I also add flax and toasted wheat germ, anywhere from a 1/4 to a 1/2 cup each.

Another favorite is to make the plain oatmeal with milk and sweeten with dark molasses.

This AM reheated a cup of mush made from 60% oatmeal/40% wheat bran, mixed with 1 oz. crumbled sharp cheddar cheese, seasoned with a few black walnuts and black pepper.  

I am a big supporter of home made oatmeal - I find the stuff in the packets just looks like sawdust and is way too sweet!

I have some jumbo oats, soy milk, dried cranberries, prunes and almonds sat in the fridge at work to heat up soon for lunch. exciting!

I love oatmeal.  I like Quacker brand instant oatmeal (no flavor, regular oats).  I like to add bananas (on my healthy days) and every now and then add brown sugar and honey.  Ohhhh... it's sooo good. I eat 1/2 cup of oats, 1/2 cup of 2% milk and 1/2 cup water. 

I eat plain oats and make my own combinations- today was mashed banana, pumpkin and drizzled with peanut butter, tomorrow is with chopped/microwaved apple and pumpkin spice trail mix.

I used to love the maple brown sugar weight control oats and the raisin, date and walnut quaker ones- either made with milk, or topped with fat free greek yogurt and sliced banana Smile

I too am an oatmeal girl!  Every morning I microwave .5 cup of the regular Quaker Oats with a little salt and a cup of skim milk - sometimes I add a little cinnamon or strawberries, but nothing sweet.  I've noticed that if I eat any sugar at all for breakfast, I am hungry again at 10:00am.  This keeps me going until noon without any trouble.

One question for all of you oatmeal pros out there - what do you know about steel cut oats?  I can't say that I've ever had them or even know what makes them different than regular oats, but I know they have even more fiber than what I am eating now.  Any recommendations or thoughts on how to cook them?

I love oatmeal! I eat it pretty much everyday for breakfast or as a night snack! :D

My 2 favorite ways to eat oatmeal is w/ soymilk, dark chocolate, and shredded coconut or soymilk, peanut butter, and banana. I always put flaxseed meal in it too.



Kell, thanks for pointing out the sugar in the Kashi.   When I started eating healthy a few years ago I started buying those packets of oatmeal and some quick oats and then I heard that both quick oats and the instant oatmeal were very high on the glycemic index.  That was enough to convince me to switch to real oatmeal.   I found the glycemic index and as it turns out, instant or quick oats are 65-68, only a hair better than white bread (70) and slightly worse than table sugar! (65).  In other words, when it comes to blood sugar and it's effect on your insulin levels and increasing your risk for diabetes, and fat storage, it's no different than eating white sugar straight from the jar, or white bread.

On top of that, I just don't trust food coming from a factory that it actually has the same nutritional profile as the package says.  Yes, that might be the nutritional profile of the raw ingredients, but reducing things to "quick cooking" or "instant" probably reduces the nutrition content even further. 

So 23, if you are eating a packet of this stuff at say 150 calories, and your daily caloric intake is 1200, you just started off your day with the equivalent of 12.5 % of your calories in pure sugar, so far as your blood insulin is concerned.  I'm not trying to be critical believe me, I just don't want anyone deluding themselves into thinking that instant oatmeal is anywhere close to the same thing.  It would be about the same as saying Gatorade is the same as Orange me anyway...

I am a huge oatmeal advocate, and eat it almost every day. My current favorite recipe is 1/2 cup old fashioned oats, 1/2 cup plain soymilk (I'm a lactard), 1/4 cup water, 1/6 cup craisins, a ton of good quality cinnamon, and 1/4 cup canned pumpkin. I make it in the microwave if I'm pressed for time, but it's even better on the stove top. Pure heaven!

Personally, I can't stand the prepackaged stuff - it is way too sweet for me, and the texture grosses me out. In fact, my husband grew up thinking he just hated oatmeal, because he had only had the instant packet kind. Now he gets bummed out if I don't make enough oatmeal for him too ^_^
