I've been concentrating on eating an oat based cold cereal for breakfast with hopes of lowering my cholesterol. The last one I bought: Cascadian Farms Honey Nut Os is definitely not a favourite. They are too crispy, too small and taste like they've been dipped into a sugary syrup before being baked.
Have to say I haven't had good old Cheerios for some time so not sure how those would be, but I do love the Fresh & Easy Oatios! They are light, almost fluffy once the milk is added, and have a nice wholesome taste.
What does everyone else like?
Oatmeal is good for lowering cholesterol. I've never done this, but I've heard a lot of people on here talking about soaking them in milk/yogurt overnight in the fridge and eating them that way.
I've always heard Cheerios were good for that too, but I think they had to stop advertising that in their commercials because they didn't lower cholesterol as much as they had once thought. I could be wrong about that though.
Oh right gi-jane, I love muesli, but I need to soak it overnight and I usually forget to do that! I make my own with oats, a 9 grain cereal mix, some sliced almonds and some dried fruit. The Familia brand is good and it's sold here, but so expensive -- it's much more cost efficient to buy in bulk from the bins and throw it together.
Yeah, megan, I'm not sure eating oats actually works to lower cholesterol, but I'll take my chances :)
Any high fiber cereal with at least 7 grams of fiber per serving (or for that matter, high fiber diet that provides 30 grams of fiber a day) will do that. Cheerios are not especially high in fiber, so I don't know how they get away with making that claim. I eat Whole Foods 365 high fiber cereal, or plain shredded wheat, or I add a tablespoon of flaxseed meal to my oatmeal to boost the fiber. Cheerios has only 3 grams of fiber. You have to read the labels.
My cholesterol went from 230 to 160 during the 3 years I have been eating this way.
My mother has always stuck by cheerios with some almond slivers and blueberries in soy milk for breakfast. She has had a lot of luck lowering her bad cholesterol and raising her good, but that could be also due to the 1 glass of cognac a day which she swears by.

Over several years of trying I haven't been able to change LDL with either diet or weight loss. A few months ago I tried drastically upping my dietary fiber (soluble and insoluble), starting about a month ahead of a cholesterol test. My total cholesterol went up a little bit from the previous test and my bad cholesterol LDL went up from 93 to 106. So I'm no believer in this strategy. I got cholesterol under control using statins (which whacked LDL down by 40-50 mg/L), and still take some. It could be that the high fiber dietary approach would have worked if the statin hadn't been present, or if the starting LDL level had been a lot higher.
The cholesterol number I have been able to change without medication is HDL. It's gone up from 30-40 to the high 60's as I exercised more.
