# LOCKED TOPIC Homemade sweet tea, math for sugar in serving

I think I'm seeking reassurance on my math skillz more than anything. So, here's the info:

1 gallon of tea

1 cup of sugar

Let's say 12fl oz serving.

My answer was 19.2 grams of sugar per serving.

This was assuming 1 cup of sugar weighed 205g. (I googled, currently at work) Then I divided 205/128 (128oz in a gallon(google)) to = 1.6g per oz. Then 1.6*12=19.2g of sugar per serving.

Is this right?

I'm also just guessing I made a gallon. It was in a pitcher, and I'm not sure what the capacity was for it. But that doesn't really matter for this scenario.

Nobody should be consuming that much sugar in a single glass of tea. That's like 90% of your added sugar intake for the day.

Drink it unsweetened, or at least sweeten with stevia and lemon juice.

I did it in my head - 200g to half a cup, and 10 - 12 oz cups to a gallon, and came up with 20g, close to your number.

I've been drinking a lot of unsweet herbal tea lately at night. It tastes sweet but doesn't contain sugar. I swap between licorice/orange rind and a mint blend. I make a pot, drink a cup or two hot, then stick the pot in the refrigerator to drink over the next day or two, either cold or reheated.

1 gallon = 16 cups tea

1 cup = 1 cup sugar

12 oz = 1.5 cups

16/1.5 = 10.7 servings (round up to 11)

11/16 (the number of tablespoons of sugar in 1 cup) = 0.6875 tbsp of sugar per serving. about 3/4 a tbsp.

Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride tea FTW. Tastes super sweet without any sugar/sweetner.

To answer your question, though: Yes, your math is correct assuming the amounts of ingredients you used are.

According to your math, that's roughly 2.25 teaspoons of sugar per serving, or 11.25g of added sugar per serving. Doesn't seem like too much to me, especially considering we know nothing else about the OP's added sugar consumption.

Edit: Shouldn't you have divided the number of tablespoons of sugar in a cup (16) by the number of servings of tea (11) in your last step? That makes almost 1.5 tablespoons of sugar per serving, or 17.5g sugar per serving (3 teaspoons to a tablespoon, 5g of sugar per teaspoon, right?). I may be wrong since I'm in a cold-medication brain fog.

Yes! I don't like mint teas but my daughter does. She likes the Plantation Mint tea but I'm sure she'd be in heaven with a more pepperminty version.

This was a rush job before I headed to a meeting! Any corrections are welcome.

I like Celestial Seasonings Christmas gingerbread tea and their mint green tea (though i find I need to double-bag it to make them strong enough). No need for sugar.

I seriously never knew an unsweetened tea could taste so sweet until I'd had the Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride. I do also have the Gingerbread Spice and considered the Sugar Plum flavor the last time I was at the store.

I love tea!

I've eaten at a restaurant called Carnivore in Kenya, and they served like 15 types of meat. Most of it was strange simply thinking about the animal one typically wouldn't eat in America. BTW, horses sometimes eat sugar cubes...

I agree floggingsully, stevia tastes awful.

I have kangaroo, ostrich, moose, elk and deer in my freezer right now.

I can't imagine horse being much different than elk.
