Does green tea increase your metabolism?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone,

I heard that drinking green tea or taking green tea tablets increases your metabolism. Does anyone know if this is true? I'm thinking about buying green tea pills (I dont like tea), so I was wondering if this is a good investment or a waste of money?

Have you gotten on Goggle scholar to look up peer reviewed articles. I was always told the reason greentea works is because of its anti-oxidant content.

same here, I like it for it's anioxidant properties rather then weight loss or w.e. plus it tastes good.

This is an old article I found on WebMD about it.

Jan. 26, 2005 -- Need another healthy reason to drink green tea? Aside from fighting heart disease, cancer, and other diseases, a new study shows that drinking green tea may also fight fat.

The study showed that people who drank a bottle of tea fortified with green tea extract every day for three months lost more body fat than those who drank a bottle of regular oolong tea.

Researchers say the results indicate that substances found in green tea known as catechins may trigger weight loss by stimulating the body to burn calories and decreasing body fat.

The findings appear in the January issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Green Tea: Fat Fighter?

Black tea, oolong tea, and green tea come from the same Camellia sinensis plant. But unlike the other two varieties, green tea leaves are not fermented before steaming and drying.

Most teas contain large amounts of polyphenols, which are plant-based substances that have been shown to have antioxidant, anticancer, and antiviral properties.

However, green tea is particularly rich in a type of polyphenols called catechins. These substances have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, but recent research in animals show that catechins may also affect body fat accumulation and cholesterol levels.

In this study, researchers looked at the effects of catechins on body fat reduction and weight loss in a group of 35 Japanese men. The men had similar weights based on theirBMI (body mass index, an indicator of body fat) and waist sizes.

The men were divided into two groups. For three months, the first group drank a bottle of oolong tea fortified with green tea extract containing 690 milligrams of catechins, and the other group drank a bottle of oolong tea with 22 milligrams of catechins.

During this time, the men ate identical breakfasts and dinners and were instructed to control their calorie and fat intake at all times so that overall total diets were similar.

After three months, the study showed that the men who drank the green tea extract lost more weight (5.3 pounds vs. 2.9 pounds) and experienced a significantly greater decrease in BMI, waist size, and total body fat.

In addition, LDL "bad" cholesterol went down in the men who drank the green tea extract.

The catechin content varies by amount of green tea used and steeping time. But general recommendations, based on previous studies on the benefits of green tea, are at least 4 cups a day. Green tea extract supplements are also available.

Researchers say the results indicate that catechins in green tea not only help burn calories and lower LDL cholesterol but may also be able to mildly reduce body fat.

"These results suggest that catechins contribute to the prevention of and improvement in various lifestyle-related diseases, particularly obesity," write researcher Tomonori Nagao of Health Care Products Research Laboratories in Tokyo, and colleagues.

So, is green tea tablets as good as actually drinking green tea?

I think so.

I love green tea! Some research shows it is fat eating hehe, so that is a plus! But it tastes good too, and has SO many health benefits! I would recommend it for anyone seriously.

I love green tea. I drink several cups of it a day and I definitely think it has helped me lose a bit of weight.

I have been drinking green tea daily for years (no sugar or sweetener)and here I am needing to lose about 50 this is not a cure-all for weight loss. You can eat fattening fries and candy bars and wash it down with green tea and it won't help you really.

I'm sure it helps a little bit. Maybe I'd have to lose 55 instead of 50 if I haven't been drinking it so much. Who knows?

I am drinking Green tea with Passion Fruit, Mango and orange.  It taste good cold without any sweetener.

It sad that green tea help to fight the cancer.

Well, that's not a bad thing from my point of view.  (:

I am new to this site and I have recently started drinking green tea (I am a devoted tea drinker in general)  I was wonering... how much do you all think is enough/ too much, etc.  I want to be balanced.  I know that it can dehydrate you if you are not careful.  So, what do you'll think?

I love Dr. Weil ITO EN Green/White brewed tea.  It comes in cans and I drink it cold..  Very tasty and it does help curb my hunger!

I believe more recent studies have shown that the water consumed in tea, coffee, and other beverages won't dehydrate if you're still drinking plenty of regular water.  I would say you could probably drink as much as you want as long as you also had 4-6 (minimum) glasses of water too.

Also, I just heard about this green tea thing in a book I'm reading about boosting your metabolism.  Today I went out and bought Lipton naturally decaffinated green tea bags.  I don't normally care for tea so I made it a little weaker than others might care for.  But, I figure weak green tea is better than no green tea.   I'm drinking my first cup right now!

I am taking green tea tablets for 2 weeks first week it did not work but now i can feel like i don't wanna eat too much and it is making me slimmer but there is only 1 big problem about green tea tablets it will make you eat sweet like nothing because it is sweet burning i can't stop myself eating sweet it is like i need sweet so badly if you can stop yourself eating sweet it will work more but im totally convinced about it worked with me even though i ate sweet alot still it made me slimmer even my friends told me that i look a bit slimmer

Have not read one bad thing about green tea. I use that, Fish Oil and Cayenne Fruit everyday. Cayenne peppers and other hot peppers have a substance called Capsaicin in them which has been shown to have many health benefits including weight/fat loss, heart and blood vessel support, pain and inflammation relief and more. Read more here. 0230.htm

Studies have shown that giving a patient Cayenne or other hot peppers during a heart attach is as effective as aspirin.

Hillary Clinton eats hot peppers everyday and swears by them. I do too. arys-health-plan-hot-peppers/ ine-articles/hot-pepper-health-benefits-20466 5.html

Drinking warm/hot tea is actually better than taking green tea pills because the warm liquid helps with digestion.

Both are good for boosting the metabolism though.

Studies actually show that those who drink 6 cups of green tea a day (2 per meal) lose TWICE as much weight as those who do not.

If you go on wikipedia and look up 'green tea' there is a listing of the many health benefits that come with drinking it.
