I e-mailed Starbucks to find out what makes their Frappucino Light blend so light. I've been avoiding artificial sweeteners for months and just cutting down on my real sugar intake.
Anyway, I thought it might have skim milk instead of 2% or higher but no....
Thank you for contacting Starbucks Coffee Company.
To achieve the best taste profile, the Frappuccino Light blended coffee beverage contains three sweeteners: Sucralose (sold as Splenda), Acesulfame-Potassium (sold as Sunette) and high fructose corn syrup. The result is a delicious beverage with fewer calories than our original Frappuccino blended beverages."
This makes me very sad. I was totally enjoying my tall coffee light frap for only 90 cals. Such a let down.
Unless you buy plain bottled water, it's getting harder and harder to find a drink without artificial sweeteners in them.
wow that is great to know. thanks for the research...
I usually get iced tea with no sweet stuff- just a lemon or lime. Or frozen yogurt if I want sugar.
Blugh...I JUST drank an iced skinny cinnamon dolce latte and I feel sick! I wish I would have come across this forum before I went there! It would have saved me a serious tummy ache!
isn't it common sense to know that sugar free syrups are going to have some sort of artificial sugar substitute...?
honestly, almost any "light", "reduced fat" or "fat free" product is going to have artificial sweeteners in them. i don't see why it's a real problem.. it's not going to make you gain weight since it has less calories, right?
True, it has fewer calories but I don't want to consume artificial sweeteners and I prefer to choose foods/drinks that don't contain them.
I don't get those because I could never figure out what was in it. I still wont get it. I usually just get a Fat Free Iced Latte. I am trying to cut down on all the sweetners, they probably aren't good for you. I add a few packs of the raw sugar to my latte for a really great NATURAL sweet taste.
I'm glad you posted this cellophane_star. I had the same question yesterday.
I was in Starbuck's and wanted a cool drink, but I also wanted low fat, low/no sugar.
When I asked about what was in the Frap Lite, the guy behind the till said he didn't know because it came as a powder mix. **Warning bells** went off in my head.
I settled for an iced latte, which to me was the perfect alternative. It's iced (ok... not blended but no biggie), I get to choose my milk option, and control my own sweetening.
Obviously, like posts already mentioned if you go for the sugar-free syrup.... you're going to get the usual chemical sweeteners.
So fear not, folks. Try the iced coffee drinks instead of the blended ones, if you really want a cold Starbuck's this summer. (No... I don't work for the company ...)
I was enjoying those light frapps as well. Is there evidence that the artificial sweeteners they are using are harmful?
Here is some information on the Dangers of Aspartame...
Here is some information on High Frutcose Corn Syrup...
And some info on the Acesulfame-Potassium...
I just did a google search for these ingredients and this is what I found.
I'd never order one of those thinking I wasn't going to be filling my body with crap. Everything in moderation I guess?
On the topic of Starbucks, I recently emailed them asking for the ingredients in their "sugar-free" syrups (those used in their Skinny Lattes...different, as far as I'm aware, from the light frap mix):
- Sugar Free Caramel Syrup: Water, Natural and Artificial Flavour, Cellulose Gum (E466), Citric Acid (E330), Sucralose (E955), Preservative: Sodium Benzoate (E211), Colour: Caramel (E150d)
- Sugar Free Cinnamon Dolce Syrup: Water, Natural and Artificial Flavours, Cellulose Gum (E466), Citric Acid (E330) Sucralose (E955), Preservative: Sodum Benzoate (E211), Colour: Caramel (E150d)
- Sugar Free Hazelnut Syrup: Water, Natural and Artificial Flavour, Maltodextrin, Cellulose Gum (E466), Citric Acid (E330), Sucralose (E955), Preservative: Sodium Benzoate (E211)

Yeah... my favourite drink is my Soy Latte (iced or hot) anyways, so it doesn't affect me much, but good to know : )
