I eat a funnel cake once a week and I don't include it in my daily calorie count.
How many calories do you think a funnel cake is?
The ones I get are about 12" in diameter, deep fried, topped with two scoops of ice cream, drizzled with strawberry sauce and caramel and also sprinkled with powdered sugar.
I'd really like to get an idea of how much that one is!
Any good guestimates?
You'd be looking at well over 1200 calories.
The cake itself is roughly 760 calories, 2 scoops of ice cream 300 roughly calories then add in the sauces and sugar. Funnel Cake nutrition values:
750 for the cake
600 for ice cream
250 for sauces
about 1600 calories. thats my maintenance haha
mmmmm funnel cake, never had it with all the accoutrements. havent had one for...3 years?

sleepybun: I used to buy them on occasion at fairs, amusement parks, and tourist sites. I haven't had one in years. I also years ago bought a funnel cake mix and made my own. I absolutely love the good ones, usually just with the powdered sugar tossed on. I would think that if you only ate one a week but ate healthy the rest of the week you should be OK. Gosh, I am glad that I don't have a tasty funnel cake next to me right now, because I would scarf it down.

Yes. Once a week only. If it's Tuesday this week, it better be Tuesday of next week (or Wednesday, but it usually doesn't get pushed back so many hours) before I have my next one. The rest of the time I try my best to eat well... it is my only justification for this sinful, sinful abomination.
You know what it is ... it's that nice hot and cold sensation... where the ice cream melts in your mouth while melting on top of that crispy golden fried batter. You gotta eat it quick though, you still want that crunch while the ice cream is atop it...
Sure, make my mouth water! Oh, wouldn't I like to have a funnel cake with some fresh raspberries or blackberries and whipped topping on it right now! Yes, I would.
i think that's awesome that you have a funnel cake every week. it's really good to treat yourself, actually essential in a healthy diet, as long the treats don't start becoming "regular" food eaten daily. i guess i don't understand why you need to know how many calories, though, if you've eaten them once a week every week and they don't make you gain weight or anything (i assume). they're not causing a problem, right? i think there's a thread somewhere on here about don't ask, don't know foods. this fits the category, no?
Since the city of Lincoln is hosting its last State Fair, my wife and I are going up tomorrow. I haven't been to the state fair in years. But I am definitely going to eat a funnel cake!

I wouldn't know where to get funnel cake outside of a carnival or amusement park either. I do see cotton candy in grocery stores now, but that's it.

just to let anyone from Canada know, East Side Mario's has fully dressed funnel cake (2 scoops of icecream, caramel and butterscotch, whipped cream, powdered sugar, strawberry sauce) for $6.99, if you ever feel like having a naughty meal, I definitely suggest you try their's.
Don't know if they have that restaurant in the states however.
Ah, to heck with it. I am going to try to make a whole wheat funnel cake using whole wheat flour, egg, milk, baking powder, and salt. I don't know what I'm doing, but that has never stopped me before. I will pour the batter into a ziplock bag, cut out a corner, and try making one that way. If it fails, which it probably will, I shall still buy me a funnel cake at The State Fair.
In fact, I will probably buy one even if by some odd coincidence I do make something edible. Nope, one of those calorie beasts is enough for one day...or even one week.
Appearance = D- (I didn't quite get it poured out of the bag right and I didn't turn it correctly)
Taste = A (I love whole wheat things, like bread and pizza crusts, and now I will add whole wheat funnel cake; however I won't be eating one a week)
Calories = best questimation = 872 ????
Most funnel cakes follow similar recipes, as nearly as I can figure out, but this is what I used for one cake:
- 1 egg 70 calories
- 3/4th cup whole wheat flour 300 calories
- 2 tablespoons of sugar 100 calories
- 1/2 cup of skim milk 40 calories
- 3/4th teaspoon of baking powder 2 calories
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- fried in Canola oil (How much got soaked into the cake?) 300 calories????
- 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar 60 calories
This was a full-sized funnel cake, not a 6 inch one. However, there was some wasted batter, so I don't know how accurate my calorie count is.

One of these days, when I'm confident enough in my own cooking abilities, I'm going to try making my own funnel cake. For me, appearance doesn't matter. As long as it tastes good, who cares!!
sleepyburn: I should't state what I am about to state, but I will, hoping to save you money. You can easily make your own good tasting funnel cakes. If you don't want to use whole wheat flour, which is the only flour I use in any of my baking/cooking, you can use All-Purpose. You can mix the ingredients by hand using a fork or spoon. Get a skillet and put in around 1 inch of peanut oil if you have it, but it is expensive, or use Canola oil which is cheaper. Or use whatever vegetable oil you can find. I normally only use extra virgin olive oil in my cooking, but it starts smoking at too high of temps.
That recipe I listed definitely works. The cake was very tasty. The key thing is that you need to find a funnel at a hardware or grocery store that works better than my bag experiment. You want to get the grease hot, but not so hot it starts smoking. One way to test is to drop a tiny gob into the grease and you can tell if it starts cooking right away. Whatever you do, don't put the funnel cake batter in before the grease is ready, because then you will have a grease sodden funnel cake that is way toooooooooo greasy-tasty and high in calories. Another way you could test your cooking a funnel cake is to use a small skillet and put a tablespoon or two of batter into the hot grease in the small skillet. Then you could sample taste the little critter and see what you think. The funnel cake will burn fairly quickly, so you need to have tongs ready to turn it. That is where I screwed up a bit, because when I poured the funnel cake, the cross sections did not adhere to the outer circle. But in any case don't leave it on one side in the grease for very long. That's why I suggest you use a really small skillet or pan and try a couple of test runs.
I am going to experiment with trying to make a nice-looking one, but not until next week. I had my insanity-cookie experiment disaster last week, and I don't want to fall into the enticing grasp of the funnel cake monster.

i went to a diner in nj that had funnel cake fries... they were soooo delicous and dangerous luckily i just split them with the table so i couldnt scarf the whole thing all by myself... we also dipped them in vanilla ice cream soooo good....no idea about the calories tho, that was my vacation time so i wasnt counting that week

To reward myself for not buying a funnel cake at the State Fair today, I made another whole-wheat one when I got home. I followed Mary's idea and only make a 6 inch one and kept the calories to 500 this time--I hope!
