What to eat after dinner?

Quote  |  Reply
I need some tips on what-to-eat after dinner.
I just ate dinner and I'm up to about 1,000 calories. (I'm supposed to be eating more, since I'm trying to gain some weight), and I was wondering what do I eat after dinner? What do YOU eat after dinner? Thanks for your helpful tips! :)

I like microwave popcorn. Or buttered toast. Or even a packet of flavored oatmeal - my favorite is cinnamon spice. Comforting, starchy things. I think the carbohydrates in them make you calm and sleepy too. A perfect end to the day.
A bowl of frozen berries is always good. I have frozen blueberries, raspberries, strawberries... yummy and they taste so sweet so it's like dessert =)
Thanks for the ideas! D:
I usually eat oatmeal in the morning, for breakfast, so I don't know if I should eat it again. I have the apples & cinnomin one. good!

Usually I'll just have fruit... or maybe a very little piece of chocolate. I rarely have enough room for dessert after the dinners I eat. :]

But maybe mix some fruit in with lf/ff yogurt? Or a scoop of peanut butter with a liiiittle dash of honey, or a couple chocolate chips?

I go with half a powerbar protein plus, or a can of tuna....lots of protein for very little calories, and it keeps me from waking up hungry in the middle of the night.  I also hear that you need the protein overnight if you are trying to build lean muscle, because that is when the tissue repair happens.  Don't eat tuna every night, though--you can get a buildup of mercury in your system.

I avoid fats and carbs at night.

You only ate 1,000 calories including dinner?

You need a pint of Ben and Jerry's, and no I'm not kidding. When I first pulled myself out of eating 1,200 calories a day, I had to do that for a few days in a row until I started eating more during the day.

You're going to kill yourself if you keep this up. I'm serious.

Nowadays I usually do granola and yogurt or baby carrots with peanut butter before bed...It's the only way I'm going to get enough calories.

Most of the people who will respond to this thread are still trying to lose weight, and will only be eating half as many calories per day as you need to eat.

Since my calorie goal for the day is 1400, if I was at 1000 for the day, I'd make a nice half a sandwich and have it with a glass of milk and a piece of fruit.  In other words, a small meal.  I don't eat after 8 pm though, because it keeps me awake.
well what kind of foods do you like? avoid? need to start eating?

for example, do you like Sweet foods? well definetly all the fruit that was mentioned. maybe some dessert-flavored yogurts ( i get a great brand..(sorry, i forget the name, but i've got their Key Lime Pie, Lemon Chiffon, Strawberry Cheesecake and Cherries Jubilee in my fridge) , or some of the icing-coated nutrition bars. (Fiber One Chocolate Chew Bar)

Do carbs help you sleep better? Maybe single serving boxes of cereals (i love honey bunches of oats, all versions, dry), toast with sugar free preserves (i could eat a whole jar of the strawberry kind) or maybe a bagel? (kmart sells 140 cal bagels)

Ya know?
I know, I've been trying
I thought I ate more but it seems I did'nt.
What I ate today:

    -Apple&Cinnomin Oatmeal (110 Cals.)
-2 Slices of Whole Wheat Bread (80 Cals.
    -1 Medium Banana (100 Cals)
                Total: 290 Cals
    -1 Sandwhich
-2 Slices of Whole Wheat bread w/ 2 Slices of Turkey Breast, 1 Slice of Tomatoe, 1 Slice of Fat Free Cheese, and Lettuce
    -1 Orange
    -3 Peices of Celery
    -5 Baby Carrots
               Estimated Total: 260 Cals
       -1 Cup of Vegtable Soup
                Total: 90 Cals
-Kashi Frozen Meals: Sweet & Sour Chicken
                Total: 350 Cals

Grand Total: About 1000 Cals

I thought this was enough, but when I counted, it seems it was'nt
I don't know what I'm doing wrong =/

You need to totally revamp what you're eating.

Let's start with breakfast:

Stop eating the instant oatmeal garbage- buy rolled oats and cook up 1 cup dry weight (that's 2 servings). Stop eating bread with oatmeal - it's pointless. Start eating eggs with the oatmeal in some form (hard-boiled, scrambled - whatever). You can keep the banana.

If you want to keep the bread, keep it, but you're going to need a hell of a lot more than 2 slices of turkey. Try 4-8 slices - yes I'm serious. If you want the cheese, make it have some fat in it.

TV dinners need to be chucked. If you must eat them, eat two of them.

In place of the TV dinner, I'd eat 6-8oz of chicken or steak, along with a carb source like sweet potatoes, beans, or rice, and some green veggies on the side. Eat a piece of fruit for dessert if you want.

Now for snacks, you need a snack between every meal and one before bed.

Like I said, I often do carrots and PB or granola and yogurt. Also a handful of nuts is fine. You can even eat protein bars and take a scoop of whey protein powder if need be.

Where would I be without dm84? :)
Thanks a lot man, this really helped
Although, I just went food shopping--Oh well :/
Like I said before, I'm do dense beyond all means when it comes to cooking, but it should'nt be that hard with the oats--Question, if I replace the whole "oatmeal" thing with Kashi:Go Lean Cereal (13 G of Protien per serving) will I be fine? Along with the milk, it should add up to about 22G of protien.
4-8 slices, got it. However, those lunch meats are expensive..
I see. I think I'm gonna make myself feel better and eat some Egg whites :D
Thanks for the information
Your my savoir!

Lol, no problem.

Regarding the cooking- I know what a pain it is. I wound up essentially starving last year because I used ramen noodles and fast food in place of food for several months. Big mistake.

Eventually I realized I was going to die if I didn't at least try to cook; now I can cook pretty easily, even though my food isn't exotic by any means.

Cooking chicken breasts is easy. Just buy some chicken breasts, season them with spices, oil, or salsa, put it on a broiler pan, and bake at 350 degrees for like 45 minutes. You can nuke a sweet potato in the microwave in like 8 minutes, and you can nuke broccoli or squash in the microwave in 2 minutes.

Regarding the Kashi - regular oatmeal is preferable, but right now I'd say eating the Kashi with milk is fine.

As for the egg whites, you better be eating some PB with that Cool

i nice toasted piece of wheat bread with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter.  200 cal.
Indeed it is. I have chicken breasts at the moment. I forgot, I can actually cook those :)
What about a baked potatoe instead?
If I do decide to eat the instant oatmeal this week, should I put 2 packs instead?
Oh, I just ate Waffles w/ Peanut butter instead. (2 Waffles)
So good, just to let you know :)

Yeah, definitely use 2 packs of instant oatmeal. Baked potato is fine if that's what you prefer.

Good job with waffles and PB. Don't worry, within a few days you'll get used to eating more.

Try a Clif Bar or Luna Bar; they taste like dessert and have tons of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein. Plus, Luna Bars are about 190 calories, and Clif Bars can go to about 260, so they're good for a weight-gain nighttime snack.
After dinner is my been-good-all-day treat.  Usually a pint of high fat ice cream --- kidding!  I love the 70 or 90 cal Kozyshack sugarfree tapioca, rice pudding or applepie custard.  Another treat is sugarfree fudgesicles and I can even have two for just 80 calories.  A sweet thing to look forward too!
I like having applesauce or fruit after dinner.
I usually have a bowl of cereal and milk before bed

when you suggest PB, do you have a particular brand you like better...
