Ok, so this is a little gross, but I really want to know if this is just me or if it's normal. I know that certain foods are notorious for making your urine smell funny (ie asparagus, coffee). I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this with bran flakes? When I eat them it makes my urine smell like the cereal and it is an almost neon yellow color, even though I have had plenty of water. Is this normal?
The bright yellow color is due to riboflavin (a B vitamin). The Bran Flakes are probably "enriched" with B vitamins. If you also take a multivitamin, it will be even brighter.
I'd check the sugar content on the cereal, I know that when I used to eat bran/special k type cereals a lot, my urine used to smell 'sweet'. Manufacturers often pad out that kind of cereal with a lot of added sugar to make up for the lack of fat content, so its worth checking your brand.
