Best bread while on a diet

Quote  |  Reply
Hi, I'm a vegetarian and I need to lose 8 more pounds to reach my goal. I was wondering which types of bread are best for a diet. I know whole wheat is the best but I'm tired of eating slices of whole wheat bread all the time. What about rolls? like whole wheat kaiser rolls, challahs, conchas, turkish pide bread, lavash or maybe even focaccia? Please let me know.  Thanks

I've stopped buying bread.  The ones I like (sourdough, rye, challah, french, foccacia, and those artisan breads) are just too high in calories, and the ones that are good for you I don't much like.  I buy whole wheat mini pitas and whole wheat English muffins.  I only eat them about 4 times a week.  I get my whole grains in other ways - high fiber cereal, brown rice, and other whole grains.

Another reason I stopped eating so much bread - it tends to be high in sodium and I really have to watch that.
I don't eat much bread.   I do use the La Tortilla  6" soft tortillas often for lunch tho.  If I need a bun for a hamburger or chicken patty I like the Light Whole Wheat buns from I think it's called Village Hearth or something like that.  Only 80 calories per bun.
I get the "Healthy Life" brand breads. Low-calorie, high-fiber. :)
is soda bread good to eat on a diet?!
I eat Wonder bread light, only 40 cals. Otherwise I don't eat bread either.
I buy a really good, basic bread called Honey Oat Bran.  The only ingredients are whole wheat flour, oat bran, water, yeast, salt, and honey.... doesn't get any more basic than that!  It has 55 cals a slice and tastes great too.  I believe the brand is Big Sky, and Shaws carries it.

Other than that, I like a nice light rye bread or pumpernickel.  Both are filling but more interesting than plain whole wheat.

I know a lot of people cut out bread when they're watching their calories, but I find it's worth it as it actually fills me up so I definitely get my 'calories worth' and stay full for hours after a meal that has bread in it.  It's a personal thing, I guess.
I only do La Tortilla wraps, Ezekiel No Salt bread, and homemade oat bread.  :)
Emily, why soda bread?  As far as I can see it isn't very nutritious and is made from white flour. 032.html
LAVASH BREAD- YUMMY, so soft, and low in cals, definitley one of my favs!!!
You don't mention if you have a bread machine or not, but I make my own bread... it's far better than any bread I buy in the store and very easy to make, plus I KNOW what goes into it.  This is a very moist and light bread that tastes fantastic!  I try lots of bread recipes, but this is the one I come back to time and time again.

Whole Wheat Honey Bread

  • 1 1/8 cups water
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon dry milk powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • Set bread machine on whole wheat setting and away you go.  12 slices per loaf, 148 calories per slice.
I love to use whole wheat pitas. they are filling and taste amazing, plus, if you use just one, its half the cals. as two pieces of bread, (depending on brand of course).
My favorite meal for lunch is a pita with some hummus, spinach, and a pickle. Its sooooooooooooo good.
wonder bread has italian light at 2 slices for 80 cals
I swear by Ezekiel. But only...once or twice a week!
I recently saw a wheat wonder bread that had 40 for two slices!  I bet it doesn't have a lot of nutrition...but gosh darnnit you could have a *gasp* sandwhich!  I wish my mom liked wonderbread.  What do you guys think about the brand?  any good?
I think wonderbread smells funny. Maybe because it's bleached flour.
I agree. Wonderbread totally smells funny. I used to looove white bread, but now I found Potato Bread and it's just.. SO Much better :) Not much healthier, but loads tastier :)
whenever i eat bread i eat sarah lees delightful white..its 45 cals a slice..i got tired of wheat bread and i get whole grain from other sources so i dont eat bread alot
I like Mission Carb Balance Tortillas. They have 110 calories per wrap with 7 net carbs with 11 grams of dietary fiber and 5 grams of protein.

Use one of these with 4 oz roasted, skinless chicken with some grilled onion and green pepper made with paprika and cumon and add a couple of tablespoons fresh salsa, you have a filling, low fat fajita that's about 260 calories! Great for lunch and it travels well when wrapped in foil.
I buy body conscious low carb bread (its low cal too).  also I like yeast free bread, and 18 grain bread.  loads of fiber.  yeast free helps me not bloat and actually helps the tummy stay smaller.
    milton's whole grain bread

90 calories a slice, full of fiber!
