How do I tighten loose skin after weight loss?

Hi my name is chad I'm 17 almost 18 when i was 16 i weighed 230 pounds i decided it was time for me to lose it .i was so fat i felt sick .i was tired of not having a girlfriend . so in October of 05 i started my diet since then Ive lost 75 pounds all though I'm very proud of what i have done i still have a problem       LOOSE SKIN!      i thought after a year it would have tighten up BUT NO it hasn't Ive thought of tummy tuck but i have no money for that . it sucks i can fell that i have a six pack under the skin but i cant see it because of the loose skin.  so does any one have any idea how to lose or tighten my loose skin?????????

Wow! well done on your weight loss! Bummer about the loose skin I don't know about how to tighten up the skin but a tummy tuck would leave you with a big scar so you'd have to take that into consideration. What do you do in terms of toning etc?

i ride bikes and i try just to get hipper lol
maybe you could try some crunches and sit ups and general toning exercises targeting your stomach. i mean it couldnt hurt. And drink lots of water I've read around here that's fairly helpful. Dunno the exact science of it.

I actually just read about loose skin. Unless yours is extreme and completely flabbing around like camel-neck, I would not even consider surgery. If loose you mean you can see the skin sort of ripple on top of your flesh when you twist your body, or when you pinch the skin on your stomach, then it is normal with weight loss.

My suggestion is like shanona, drinks lots of water, and work out to build your muscles. The tightenning of muscles underneath the skin will give appearance of firmer body. Gradually the skin will regain it's elasticity, provided it is given proper hydration, and the looseness will reduce.
You look absolutely fantastic man and On your face you definately don't look as if you've got too much excess skin. You're young too so the skin should snap back  a bit quicker than if you were older.

i have the same EXACT problem. I honestly dont think there's anything we can do....i've tried everything. i'm starting to save up for a lower body lift....seriously, i dont think theres anything we can do. and i'm afraid that if i look like a 40 year old woman in a bathing suit when im 16, what will i look like when i'm 25?
Mike Geary is a guy who talks about helping to get rid of stomach flab. He has a website called He has a lot to say, all of which makes good sense. He has a book for sale, but you can learn tons just from his website and newsletters. I'm not trying to violate any posting guidelines here, I have no affiliation with Mike except that I read his weekly newsletters and they have been tremendously helpful for me, although I am far away from my goal still.

Once skin reaches a certain point, it will not tighten back matter what. Unfortunately, surgery is the only option to remove the excess skin.

I can relate.  I'm 42 years old, and have lost large amounts of weight twice in my life, once when I was not much older than you and once when I was in my late twenties.

What you don't want to do is get depressed about small imperfections.  I did that, and i gained my weight back and then some.  I ballooned up to 385 pounds.  (I'm 6'4" tall).

The second times I lost weight, I lost 180 pounds.  I have maintained the weight loss, and Now I'm fit and muscular.  I weigh 205, and I do 200 pushups most days and lots of other exercise.  I also lok 10 years younger than my age.  However, it took a lot to get here!

After my second weight loss, I had sagging skin on my chest, abdomen, and neck.  I spent  $21,000 to tighten it up!  And I have to go back in a couple of months to get my back done for another $4500.  I'm very happy with myself, but my message to you is DO NOT GET DOWN ABOUT SMALL IMPERFECTIONS AND REGAIN YOUR WEIGHT.

Congratulations, young dude!  You're a good looking guy, and I'm sure there's a lot of fun with the ladies in your future!

My Auntie used to be obese - she lost a LOT of weight. Naturally.

For her skin she had to have cosmetic surgery because it had stretched so much ... maybe you could consider that? Because I don't think that there's really any other way.

I'm having the same problem.  I heard that if you lose weight too fast your skin doesn't have enough time to keep up. 

Someone here said water helps?

This site has the most useful advice I've found. I am trying it now myself but just started so I can't report results yet.

I lost 27 lbs in the last year and a half and have the jiggly arms and tummy pooch thing going on. This sounds like sound advice and doesn't involve some 'miracle cream'. I don't want to go under the knife because of the cost and the scars.

I figure if Octo-mom could get her body back in shape after all those babies I should be able to lose a little extra skin, right?Wink -skin-after-weight-loss/

Congrats! I too have the same struggle.  When I was pregnant I gained 75#, and stayed "comfortably thick" for quite a while after I had my son.  I have been losing for the past year and a 1/2, and I have the same issue.  Mine is predominantly on my belly.  I have done lots of reading, and have a few points I hope will help.

Drink Lots of Water to keep you hydrated from the inside. 

Keep healthy- Eating, workouts, Low salt, adequate protein, no smoking

Keep your skin moisturized from the outside- I use St. Ives Skin Firming Lotion.  It helps your skin feel hydrated, without a heavy, greasy feel. I can't prove it meets up to the claims of "Skin Firming", but I noticed a difference in the quality of my skin.  And it's not expensive at all!  I use it about 3 minutes after I towel dry from a shower. I love it!

Try Fish Oil supplements.  I just started taking them not too long ago, so I can't make a claim either way, but it is supposed to help for various reasons.

Some people have more elastisity in their skin, and some have less.  It will take time to go back, and it may never go back to perfect. But don't focus on the minor imperfections that you see.  Think about the great accomplishments you made!  You look great!

Chad:  First, congratulations on taking control of your health.  No one ever said it would be easy.   You deserve a lot of praise.

Second:  You are quite young.  I have done some research on loose skin, resulting from weight loss.  The older one is, the more difficult it is for the skin to "shrink" so to speak.  My weight loss was not as dramatic as yours, but I did lose 45 pounds.  I, too, have loose skin.  I think, though, even if ever so slightly, it is getting somewhat back to normal, but it never will conform tightly to my body again. 

I honestly think, if you are patient, and just take pride in what you accomplished, in time you have a great chance of the skin not looking so loose as you mature.  However, I do agree with the posters who stated that loose skin can not just disappear entirely.  I suspect that because you are young,  with time your skin will tighten up.
