I have recently started jogging about a month or two ago. I noticed ever since I started jogging 7 to 8 hours of sleep is not enough and I need 9 to 10 to feel refreshed the next day. Prior to jogging I used to walk for about 3 miles 3 to 4 times a week. I now jog/walk 3 to 4 miles 3 to 4 times per week. Can jogging be the cause for my body to require more sleep?
yes, your body needs to restore itself during the night, and extra activity would cause your body to need more sleep. im glad you are able to sleep for so long. i can never stay asleep, even after a very busy active day. and then i end up tired in the afternoon the next day and work out while half asleep... not good.
Well, I can only speak from personal experience ... I was getting 5-6 hrs of sleep per night, then started trail running 4-5 times per week and it really kicked my butt! I now need at least 7 hrs per night, or it's nearly impossible to get up (I've slept through the alarm going off for an hour) and I'm a zombie the next day. On the days when I run (I run after work, evenings), I also find myself falling asleep on the couch that night by 9pm ... and I used to be a no-sleepy-til-midnight kinda gal, even on work nights. Yep, running will do that!
Hmm, I don't get that...that I've noticed. What I have noticed though is that when I jog I sleep harder but don't necessarily need more sleep. I normally feel more energized the next day and have to keep myself from doing two days in a row of such.
As an fyi...I'm also in the process of mastering jogging. I'm not a fast jogger but my speed/efforts do work my heart rate in the moderate to heavy levels.
I'm only 6 weeks into the C25K program, so I'm not jogging amazingly long amounts of time, but I get what you mean. I can't get away with only 7 or 8 hours of sleep anymore. Jogging gives your body a right pounding, so I can see where your body would need time to recooperate. That's why you take days off in between jogging days, as well.
I find that when I run in the morning, I end up being sooooo tired in teh afternoon. I find that in general, when I am working out more, I have a very difficult time ever feeling fully rested even when I get over 7 hours of sleep a night.
Thank you everybody for your responses. I needed to know that although I feel energetic the next day why I require much more sleep. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong.
I jogged today, and I'm abnormally tired typing this. Don't forget to get enough potassium and protein too.
Ive recently started interval jogging. Ive noticed that im pretty tired pretty early now. Im ready for bed around 9-9.30 rather than 10-10.30..but i also get up at 6.30am......I usually go to the gym anywhere between 6-8pm, so its not too long after I get home that I go to bed. If you go during the day, maybe try taking a multivitamin and see if it helps you. When i take one, i dont feel as tired throughout the day.
yeah im normally tired about 10pm now instead of 12.30. feel so much better when i get up in the mornings though, i bounce out of bed at 7.15 hehe!!
I find that with longer runs that your body needs more sleep to recover. I still like to run in the morning before work because of the lower temperatures, but I do find that at about 2:00pm that I need to take a walk or do something physical to re-energize myself. I have also noticed that I sleep much deeper and better on the days I run.
Great to hear other people's experiences. I won't feel so guilty on Sundays when I take a nap after my long runs.
Amaizing what a 40min cat nap can do.
i dont really have this problem but this post made me feel like a lazy bum. I sleep for like ever. the last few days i have been more tired for some reason. I go to sleep at 11 and woke up today at 11 and feel back asleep for 20 minutes. thats over 12 hours of sleep. Its horrible. I just dont have a great motivation to get up!
