So excess carbs and sugars are stored as fat...right? What about excess protein? Suppose I've eaten all the protein my body can use for a day, what happens to the leftover? Also stored as fat? Stored in some secret body protein storage facility for later? Leaves the building?
Proteins are made of amino acids, chemically, they have a -COOH (acid) group and a -NH2 (amine) group each connected to a central carbon, which is connected to a different side chain (these side chains determine the type of amino acid) Proteins are made of many of these individual amino acids bonded together. Well, fats are mostly just straight carbon chains with hydrogen, carbohydrates are carbon chains with hydrogen and oxygen connected. Now, you're body's pretty good at interconverting carbs and fat, because they are based on carbon backbones, and hydrogen and oxygen are readily availible. However, protien's a little tricky because of that amine group (specifically that nitrogen). Your body can't use the nitrogen from the air, or anything else to make amino acids from fat or carbs (nitrogen fixing bacteria can do that, and plants can use ammonia, but we can only use amino acids as our source for nitrogen) However, that nitrogen can be removed by you body so protein can be converted to fat. That nitrogen is excreted as urea, and removed in the urine (incidently, that's why urine can make really good feritilizer, if you don't put down too much or too concentrated)

Well, that makes depressing sense. How much protein then, is enough, or too much? I've heard and read everything from .5 to 4 gms per pound per day. I'd like to be sure I'm getting enough to rebuild/ repair muscle and perform whatever other functions protein does, without unnecessarily feeding the fat stores.
Adding on to smartjock..> that's why too much protein is toxic to your body. That amino chain is EXTREMELY toxic, so your body has to get rid of it. Too much and it'll put a huge strain of your kidneys (filtering system). Mind you, it does take a lot of protein to cause a large amount of damage.
I read everywhere that 1 gram per kg is sufficient, so yeah. .4/.5 grams a pound sounds just about right.
