C25K on treadmill

Hey Everyone. One of my fitness goals for this winter is to be able to comfortably run 5 K. The site says that this is pretty much equal to running 30 minutes nonstop. I know that it is easier to run on the treadmill than on a trail, but since there are no trails where I live and it will be dark when I get home, I dont really have a choice about the treadmill. My question is how many minutes of non stop jogging on the treadmill would equal 30 mins of non stop trail running?

Well, trail running is a specific kind of running, and it's pretty high impact and intense. Why do you want to do trail runs? I run on the sidewalk, and you can also run in the street if you're careful. But C25k is a jogging program anyway- not a running program, so you don't have to worry about how fast you're going.

But to answer your question, 30 minutes of jogging on the treadmill = 30 minutes of jogging NOT on a treadmill, as long as you're putting the same effort into it.

But I have heard that jogging on a treadmill was easier than if you were jogging on a trail or street. Is that not true?? Because Im thinking that if jogging on a treadmill is easier (which I am sure it is because I find it so much harder to jog on a trail than the treadmill), than I should have a goal of jogging longer on the treadmill in order to finish the C25K program (I dont want to cheat, LOL).

yes, running on a treadmill is easier.  there's much less resistance, little need for balance and stability, no wind, weather, etc.  i can't give you a comparison, because i don't use a treadmill at all.

i can tell you that on roads, if it's not too hilly, i can run 5k in 28-30 minutes; on trails, it's more like 40.  even so, i much prefer trail running.  i find that i'm so occupied with where to put my feet that i don't think about how long, how far, whether or not i'm tired, etc.  plus, there are rabbits, grouse, coyotes, and moose, my dog can be off leash, and i've even started to like getting muddy.  it's impossible to get bored.

the only thing i can suggest is that you run outside when possible.  you have weekends where you come from, right?

check out - they created the c25k program and have LOTS of resources for all types of running.  They approach running from all levels, including beginners. 

I just completed week 6 of the c25k program, it's awesome.  I don't think with this program it's vital to run outside.  Read up on the program and the thought process behind it, I think you'll find all the answers to your concerns.

Thanks. I will check out the site and see what it says about treadmills. And, I would like to exercise outside on the weekends, but during the week I am limited to the treadmill. So, thanks for the replies.

Yes, running on a treadmill is easier because there's no variation like hills, though if you wanted to make it more realistic you could change up your incline to simulate them if you wanted. C25K works just fine on a treadmill, you are still getting exercise and improving your fitness. It's not a huge difference. Though I love trail running. Way more fun than a treadmill! Not many places to do it where I live though, so I stick to the treadmill.

I find running on a treadmill much harder mentally. I can go for much longer without getting bored outside.

I did the C25K on the treadmill and I found when it came to running my 1st race I wasn't as prepared as I thought I would be.

When I ran the 5k I realized that the treadmill hadn't worked the same muscles as hard.

The treadmill was a good place to get started (because I was nervous about people watching me) but now if I have to run on the treadmill I up the incline to help compensate.

I would run outside as much as possible. It's better training because it's more accurate to the actual race you'll run.
