average time for running a mile?

i don't know about average, but the range is vast.  elite 1-mile specialists will do it in less than 4 minutes.  your regular casual runner will do it in anywhere from 7 to 12.

but most people don't run a mile, they run several miles, and they pace themselves accordingly.

it takes  me 10-15 mins and IF i DO jog at all, I do about 2miles, no one says everyone needs to run SEVERAL miles, just do what feels right to YOU

not diminishing the accomplishment of a mile.  just saying that if you don't run that distance, you don't know how fast you'd do it {shrug}.

and i count 3 as "several" Wink

Definitely a huge range, but wherever you start out, keep in mind that you only get better as you run more. Just as an example, I ran an 8:30 mile year and a half ago, and now I run a 5:57. If you take up running, you improve rapidly. I don't know if you are intending to run regularly or just use this as a test of fitness, though.

P.S. I specialize in long distance.

I try to run 3-4 miles, 5 days a week.  I weight 165 and I'm 55, not too fast.  The first mile is a 12 minute mile.  After that its between 10-12.  I measure my success in sweat Cool

It all depends on how fit you are. I remember having classmates on the soccer team in 6th grade who ran about 6.5-7 minute miles (9~10 mph). I personally think a good recreational speed is 5.5-7 mph (12 - 8.5 minute mile), but that's my own personal preference, and there's always room for more. I personally run 4-5 miles a day most days of the week (5-6 days) between 6 and 7 mph... Or I did before I got runner's knee, haha. Once I recuperate I'd like to get it even faster, but like pgeorgian said, it depends on what type of runner you are. 26-mile marathoners won't have the same time as sprinters. Firstly, I second what others have said...really it just depends on your overall fitness and other factors but if you want to get quicker then you can always improve. It's all about what your own personal objectives are with running, not what everyone else is doing.

That said, this calculator lets you plug in your stats and it compares your running time with that of others of your age which is quite interesting, but it doesn't really mean anything I guess! 

The calculator is neat, but doesn't account for weight which plays a role in injury.  I'm faster on an elliptical because I won't injure myself.  I scored in the 50% based in the last 5k I ran.  I don't actually run because it injures my knee and hip.  But once a week I jog for fun, very carefully.  As long as I end up huffing and puffing several times a week I'm happy.  Increased Vo2Max is what I am trying to achieve. 

Most of the time I use machines for aerobic exercise.  When I started I could only run for 6 minutes.  Now I can bike for 10 hours on a hilly terrain.  I thought I was a lost elderly soul who couldn't walk up a hill without huffing and puffing.  So it is quite a thrill to think that age doesn't stop you from becoming fit.

I dont know about everyone else but I am a 9 minute mile person and I usually run for 30-45 minutes

There are too many unanswered questions to answer "overall."  Are you looking for a per-mile average if you run 3 miles?  5 miles?  10?  Or sprinting for a half-mile then expanding that to a "miles per hour" speed?

It's like asking "which is better, a sedan or pick-up truck?"

Well, for what purpose?  Gas mileage savings?  Cargo hauling?  Pretending to be more macho? :)  Without explaining the situation or your unique characteristics and what you're looking for, any answer given here will just add to confusion and misinformation.
