Flour tortilla chips baked from homemade flour tortillas

Recipe Ingredients for Flour tortillas chips (baked)

375 grams Wheat Flour, White, All-purpose, Enriched, Bleached
2 teaspoon Baking Powder
1 tsp Salt, Table
6 tbsp All-Vegetable Shortening
1.5 cup (8 fl oz) Water
0.5 oz Cooking Spray
1 tsp, ground Basil, Dried

Recipe Directions for Flour tortillas chips (baked)

  1. Mixed together the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Add the shortening and cut it into the flour with a fork or pastry cutter.

  2. Add the warm water, mixing with a wooden spoon or your hands until the dough is well mixed.

  3. Remove the dough from the bowl onto a lightly flour surface. Remove pieces of the dough, rolling them into small balls (about 1 inch in diameter). Let them stand for about 10 minutes.

  4. Use a floured rolling pin to roll the dough balls until flat.

  5. Using a comal or ungreased skillet over med heat, lat the dough flat, cooking for about 2 minutes (the dough should have very light brown 'freckles') and turn it over.

  6. Remove the tortilla and lay flat on a plate or place in a tortilla warmer.

  7. Once all the tortillas are cooked, lay one flat on a counter (or other hard surface) and spray lightly with olive oil cooking spray. Alternatively, you can use olive oil in a mister with a dash of lime. Turn the tortilla over and repeat.

  8. Lightly sprinkle with basil.

  9. Using a pizza cutter or large knife, cut the tortilla in eighths. Lat flat on a cooking sheet and place in a pre-heated 400 degree oven.

  10. Baked for about 3 minutes. Remove before the tortillas turn brown. Let cool.

  11. Makes approximately 16 oz.
