I have a huge container of milled gold flaxseed and I decided to try substituting some of the butter and egg called for in this recipe with it. The conversion factors are: 1 tbsp butter = 3 tbsp flaxseed 1 egg = 1 tbsp flaxseed and 3 tbsp water The ingredients have this substitution included. The original recipe calls for 1/2 cup butter and 2 eggs. It also lists the baking time at 25-30 min.

Recipe Ingredients for Flaxseed brownies from scratch

6 tbsp butter
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
7 tbsp milled flaxseed
3 tbsp water

Recipe Directions for Flaxseed brownies from scratch

  1. Melt butter in medium saucepan, take off heat and add in wet ingredient, then dry.

  2. Pour batter into a greased and floured 8" x 8" baking pan.

  3. Bake for 20-25 min at 350 F
