Makes 20 servings



Can substitute an extra 4 1/2 tbs butter or 3 1/2 tbs lard for the shortening. Lard has less trans and saturated fat and butter has better taste, but will make the dough less flaky.

Recipe Ingredients for Empanada Dough

3 cups flour
4 tbs butter
1/4 cup shortening
1 tsp salt
2 eggs

Recipe Directions for Empanada Dough

  1. Combine flour and salt in a large bowl.

  2. Work in shortening and butter, using your fingers.

  3. Lightly beat together eggs and 1/2 cup water in a bowl, then work into flour mixture.

  4. Knead until smooth, about 1 minute. Form into a ball, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
