Recipe Ingredients for Emma's Whole Wheat Soda Bread

2 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups All-purpose flour
1 tsp Baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 1/4 cups buttermilk

Recipe Directions for Emma's Whole Wheat Soda Bread

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F. Spray cooking spray on baking sheet and sprinkle with a little cornmeal.

  2. Combine whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.

  3. Pour in buttermilk, stir in full circles until all the flour is incorporated. The dough should be soft, but not too wet and sticky.

  4. When it is combined, turn it out onto a well-floured surface.

  5. Pat and roll the dough gently with floury hands into a round shape. Flatten slightly to about 2 inches.

  6. Place the loaf on the baking sheet. Use a serrated knife to make a cross, also prick each of the four quadrants.

  7. Bake the soda bread for 20 minutes, then reduce temperature to 400°

  8. Continue to bake until the loaf is brown on top and sounds hollow when tapped, 30 to 35 minutes more.

  9. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool.
