I wanted a low-cal sugary treat. It's not the best nutritional grade but it's relatively low-fat and has no caffeine (which is key for me).

Recipe Ingredients for d's Healthful Magic Bars

3 tablespoons Coconut Oil
1 1/2 cups Whole Wheat Flour
2 tablespoons Brown Sugar
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1 teaspoon Nutmeg
1 teaspoon Cardamom
4 T Fat Free Sour Cream
1 cup Buttermilk
2 cups unsweetened carob chips
1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
1 cup chopped almonds

Recipe Directions for d's Healthful Magic Bars

  1. Heat oven to 350F. Spray 13 x 9-inch baking pan with no-stick cooking spray.

  2. Combine flour, sugar, spices, and coconut oil in small bowl. Press into bottom of prepared pan.

  3. Mix Buttermilk and sour cream.

  4. Pour buttermilk and sour cream blend evenly over crumb mixture. Layer evenly with carob chips, coconut and nuts. Press down firmly with fork.

  5. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Loosen from sides of pan while still warm; cool on wire rack. Cut into bars or diamonds. Yield: 2 dozen bars.

  6. VARIATIONS

  7. Substitute chocolate chips with dried cranberries, raisins, or other fruit for a "trail mix" magic bar. Change up your nuts for a variety.

  8. Don't eat more than one!
