Why don't don't feel like I'm in my own body?

I lost about 30 lbs over the past 6 months. I feel great, everyone has been so supportive, and I made it to my goal. I'm just maintaining now and that seems to be going okay, but I don't feel like I'm in my own body. It's the oddest thing. I don't look like myself at all when I look in the mirror and I feel sort of disconnected to me. I have dreams that my weight loss is a dream and I'm still sort of chubby.  Any thoughts on what that's about.  Is that common or do I need a shrink?


Your weight has changed quickly and you are actually not in your "old body". If your self-image is very connected to the way you look, you might feel like you are somebody else, no longer “chubby” with all that may imply.  To get to the root, I recommend an exercise from Geneen Roth’s Why Weight? A Guide to Ending Compulsive Eating.  She asks you to list the qualities you associate with being fat.  Who are you?  What do you do?  How do you feel?  And then list the qualities you associate with being thin, and answer those questions again.  Then ask about who are you at home, with your friends and at a party.  Understanding what change means to you can help it to stick.
