Recipe Ingredients for Dhal (Indian split pea soup)

1 cup split peas
3 cups water
1 tsp garlic, minced
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp saffron
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 cloves garlic, whole

Recipe Directions for Dhal (Indian split pea soup)

  1. Add all ingredients except last two into pot and bring to a boil.

  2. Then let this simmer and reduce til peas are very soft. More water can be added for consistency of preference.

  3. Place oil and garlic cloves into a ladle and heat over stove until garlic is blackened.

  4. VERY CAREFULLY AND VERY SLOWLY pour oil with garlic into soup or lower ladle into pot of soup keeping the pot cover over the pot to act as a shield. If this step is done too quickly the oil and water mixture can be violent and cause severe burn!
