This makes 2 nine-inch pies or one pan of apple bars.

Recipe Ingredients for Denise's Apple Pie

12 apples, peeled, sliced, and cored
2 T lemon juice
1 c sugar
1 t cinnamon
1 T flour
3 c flour
1 t salt
1 c shortening
1 egg
1 T apple cider vinegar
2 T milk

Recipe Directions for Denise's Apple Pie

  1. Spray apple slices with lemon juice to prevent apples from turning brown. Add sugar, cinnamon, and the 1 T flour to the apples, mix well, and let stand while making dough.

  2. Sift together the 3-1/2 c flour, salt. Cut in the shortening.

  3. Beat egg well. Add apple cider vinegar and keep in the refrigerator until ready to use. Add 4 T ice water to the egg mixture, and add this to the flour mixture half at a time, blending flour mixture well with fork between adding more liquid.

  4. Separate dough into 4 small balls for two pies or 2 for one large pan of bars.

  5. Roll out one ball of dough to desired size. Place in bottom of pan, and piece with a fork. Add apples and dot with butter. Roll out top crust, place on top of pie, crimp edges, make a slit in the top crust for heat to escape.

  6. Brush top crust with milk and sprinkle with sugar.

  7. Bake at 450 degrees for ten minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes more.
