McIntosh apples are the best. This make either 2 9-inch pies or one pan of apple bars.

Recipe Ingredients for Denise's Apple Pie

14 apples, peeled, sliced, and cored
4 T lemon juice
1 c sugar
1 t cinnamon
1 T flour
3 c flour
1 t salt
1 c shortening
1 egg, beaten well
1 T apple cider vinegar
4 T ice water
4 T butter
4 T milk
4 T sugar

Recipe Directions for Denise's Apple Pie

  1. Spray apple slices with lemon juice. Add 1 c of sugar, cinnamon, and 1 T flour. Mix well, and let stand while making dough.

  2. Sift flour and salt. Cut shortening into flour mixture with fork or pastry blender until mixed.

  3. Mix egg with apple cider vinegar and keep in the fridge until ready to pour into flour mixture.

  4. Add ice water to egg mixture, and add to flour mixture half at a time, blending flour mixture well with fork between adding more liquid.

  5. Separate dough into 4 small balls for 2 pies or 2 balls for one large pan of bars.

  6. TIP: roll out dough in plastic bag to prevent mess. Slit up side and at bottom to open up. Place dough side down on pan, peel plastic off top.

  7. Place bottom crust in pan(s) and fill with apple mixture. Dot with butter. Add top crust and crimp.

  8. Brush with a little milk, sprinkle crust with sugar.

  9. Bake at 450 for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 for 30 to 40 minutes more.
