This recipe appeared in Dear Abby's advice column every year at Thanksgiving. The original recipe called for 1 cup each of corn syrup and sugar. Celia Levitt adapted the recipe to make it less sweet. Recipe Ingredients for Dear Abby's Pecan Pie: A Not-Too-Sweet Variation

3/4 cup light corn syrup
3/4 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed
3 eggs, slightly beaten
1/3 cup butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pie crust (9-inch), unbaked
1 cup pecan halves, heaping

Recipe Directions for Dear Abby's Pecan Pie: A Not-Too-Sweet Variation

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Combine corn syrup, sugar, eggs, butter, salt and vanilla in a large bowl, mixing well.

  3. Pour filling into unbaked pie crust.

  4. Arrange pecan halves on top of filling.

  5. Bake 45-50 minutes (until toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean).

  6. If crust appears overly brown, place foil around the edges for the remainder of the baking time.

  7. Remove from oven and cool.

  8. Serve with whipped cream (optional).
