Old fashioned recipe for yummy date squares.

Recipe Ingredients for Date Squares

1 1/4 cups flour
1 1/2 cups oats
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 dash salt
1 cup margarine
500 g dates
1/2 cup sugar
2/3 cup water
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp lemon extract

Recipe Directions for Date Squares

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Line an 9-inch square cake pan with foil

  2. or parchment paper and butter lightly, then set aside. Measure

  3. flour, oats, sugar, soda, salt and butter into large bowl. Cut in butter

  4. until mixture is crumbly. Spread 2/3 of the crumb mixture in greased

  5. pan. Set aside. In a saucepan combine dates, sugar and water. Bring

  6. to boil and simmer until mixture is mushy. Spread over bottom layer

  7. of crumbs. Sprinkle remaining crumbs over top. Press down slightly

  8. with your hand. Bake for 30 minutes. Cut into squares.
