Dan bing is a popular and tasty Taiwanese street food. It is basically the marrying of a savory pancake to an omelet. It delivers a lot of food. Although the calories may seem high for a single serving, it makes a lot of food. You'll do well to get through a whole plate.

Recipe Ingredients for Dan Bing

1 cup Gold Medal All Purpose Flour
0.56 tsp Baking Powder
0.25 tbsp Toasted Sesame Oil
2.5 medium (4-1/8" long) Onions, Spring Or Scallions
2 slice Extra Lean Turkey Bacon
0.5 serving Hoisin Sauce
1 tbsp Dipping Sauce Sweet Chili
1 tbsp Vegetable Oil, Canola
2 large Egg, White
1 serving Regular Soy Sauce

Recipe Directions for Dan Bing

  1. 1. Combine the flour, sesame seed oil, dash of salt and baking powder in a bowl. Add hot water and knead until the doe forms a somewhat stiff although still pliable ball. Cover and let stand for 20-30 min.

  2. 2. Flatten the doe out into a dinner plate sized pancake. Add 1/2 tablespoon of oil to pan and let the pan heat on medium high. When the oil is ready, add the pancake and lightly brown both sides and remove from pan.

  3. 3. Beat your eggs until well mixed in a bowl. Add dash of salt, soy, chopped spring onion and turkey bacon (cut horizontally into bits). Be sure to chop and include ALL of the spring onion, not just the white bulb (there's a lot of great flavor in the green part).

  4. 4. Add your remaining oil to the pan and again let heat on medium high. Pour in the egg mixture and after the omelet begins to form, press the pancake into the still gooey top of the omelet. Let cook for about 2-3 minutes, then flip and let cook for about 1 minute.

  5. 4. Cut the dan bing in half and serve! Traditionally, the two halves of the dan bing are rolled into loose tubes.

  6. 5. Drizzle the hoisin sauce and sweet chili sauce over the dan bing and eat!
