Hearty, sweet and savory dinner. Can be served on its own or with rice, polenta, pasta or as a kind of "sloppy joe" on a whole wheat bun. Good with a green salad along side.

Recipe Ingredients for Cuban Turkey Picadillo

1 T olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 1/2 lb lean ground turkey
2 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
2 T chili powder
3/4 tsp cinnamon, ground
1/2 tsp allspice, ground
875 g tomatoes, diced (28 oz can)
1 3/4 c chicken broth
2/3 c raisins
2 T tomato paste
1/4 c red wine vinegar
1 salt
1 pepper, freshly ground

Recipe Directions for Cuban Turkey Picadillo

  1. In a large, deep frying pan over medium-high heat, warm the oil. Add the onions and saute until translucent, 3-4 minutes.

  2. Add the turkey, season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring to break up any clumps, until the meat begins to brown, 7-8 minutes. Spoon off and discard excess fat, if any.

  3. Stir in the garlic, chili powder, cinnamon, and allspice and cook, stirring frequently for minutes.

  4. Stir in tomatoes with their juice, broth, raisins, tomato past, and vinegar. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat to medium and cook, uncovered until thickened to a stew-like consistency, 10-15 minutes.

  5. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.

  6. Serve in shallow bowls over rice, polenta or whole wheat pasta.
