Recipe Ingredients for Crispy Tofu in Sweet and Spicy Soy

2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon sambal oelek (or other chili garlic hot sauce)
12 ounces firm tofu, pressed
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 lemon slices, green onions and fresh chilies, to serve

Recipe Directions for Crispy Tofu in Sweet and Spicy Soy

  1. Combine the dark soy, honey, rice vinegar and sambal oelek together and set aside.

  2. Heat a large frying pan over high heat until a bead of water sizzle upon contact and evaporates. Pour enough cooking oil to just coat the surface of the pan. Add the tofu slices to the pan, not touching. You might have to fry in two batches. Fry the tofu until the bottom is golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. If the tofu is sticking, tofu slices should release themselves from the pan when it?s ready. Carefully flip the tofu, away from you (the tofu may splatter) and fry the other side. Remove from pan and drain on a rack or a paper towel.

  3. Wash or wipe the pan clean and return to the stovetop. When pan is hot, add 1 teaspoon of cooking oil. Add the garlic and fry until fragrant, about 15 seconds. Pour in the sauce mixture and let simmer for 30 seconds to thicken slightly. Pour over the tofu. Garnish with fresh chilies, green onions and lemon wedges to serve on the side.
