Old family recipe for a buttery whole wheat dinner roll. If you want to make sweet rolls, reverse the proportions of butter and sugar and sprinkle cinnamon sugar on the melted butter, or add a filling.

Recipe Ingredients for Crescent Rolls

1/2 c. butter
1/3 c. sugar
1 egg
2 c. white flour
1 c. whole wheat flour
1 tsp. salt
1 oz. yeast
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 c. white flour
1/4 cup butter

Recipe Directions for Crescent Rolls

  1. Cream together 1/2 c. butter, 1/3 c. sugar, and 1 egg until fluffy.

  2. Work in 2c. white flour, 1 c. whole wheat flour and 1 tsp salt (mixed together first) until crumbly.

  3. Dissolve 1 oz yeast in 2 c. warm water with a little sugar so it gets bubbly.

  4. Stir yeast water into flour mixture and beat 100 strokes.

  5. Let rise, stir down, mix in enough white flour to make smooth workable dough (about 1/2 cup).

  6. Preheat oven to 350 F.

  7. Divide into six equal balls.

  8. Roll each ball out with a rolling pin until it's approximately 1/4" thick.

  9. Melt 1/4 cup butter, brush each round with melted butter, and cut it into 8 wedges.

  10. Roll from the large edge to the tip and curve slightly as you place on a cookie sheet. If they are fairly close together they will touch and be softer, if they are widely separated they will be crustier.

  11. Let rise until at least double.

  12. Bake at 350 F. for about 15-20 min. (keep an eye on them).

  13. Spray tops with cooking spray as soon as they come out to keep them very tender.
