vegetarian version of country (or chicken) fried steak

Recipe Ingredients for Country Fried Veggie Steak

2 pounds tvp or gluten
1 cup whole wheat flour
4 T paprika
2 tsp salt
2 eggs, beaten
2 T vegetable oil
1 T butter
2 T whole wheat flour
1/2 cup whole milk
1/2 cup water
1 tsp thyme
1 tsp marjoram

Recipe Directions for Country Fried Veggie Steak

  1. Use tvp or gluten (try the Gluten Steak recipe on this site!)

  2. Cut into serving size pieces

  3. Divide flour into 2 bowls

  4. Dip steak into flour, then into egg mix, and again into flour

  5. Saute in the vegetable oil until lightly browned and slightly crisp.

  6. set aside

  7. In a separate pan, melt butter and mix in 2 T flour, stirring to make a thick rue.

  8. Add milk and water and stir until mixture thickens to a thick gravy.

  9. Add thyme and marjoram .

  10. Serve gravy over steaks with potatoes and green beans for a special southern style meal!
